What's the best Portable Aircon available in the market?

Hello Guys,

Since I'm staying in a rented property, my house owner is not happy with fitting a brand new Aircon. I'm thinking to go for a Portable Aircon. I see lot of models available in the market from $280.

Can you shed some lights on the best ones around?

Cheers,
Sowny.

I bought that $400 from Aldi a few months ago.
    I can say these:
    - It doesn't drain as much electricity as you would think
    - It blows cold air from the top
    - It is very loud
    - It doesn't cool my regular sized bedroom, let alone somewhere useful like the living room
(I had it run for a full 48h's and the ambient difference was minuscule.)

I could see that if I had three of these running in my living room, that it would make a difference.
But overall it was a poor buy.

Something much more efficient in terms of cooling seems to be to open every door and windows as soon as I get home, and have fans blasting out all that stale, hot air out of the brick house, and replace it with some cool breeze running a circuit.
Or you know, to convince my landlords for an Air Con.
I mean I would've even accepted to buy the units, as long as the landlord gives permission and foots the bill for installation.
    But my landlord's/agent's hopeless.
I complained about the old/bad wiring for months and they did nothing. It took for me to actually get electrocuted from the kitchen plug for them to fix it.
The living room ceiling fan and light still doesn't work, and they won't fix it either.
You win some, you lose some.

    • Errr.. That sounds bad!
So it's better to convince my landlord and push him for it! Lemme request him again. Cheers mate.

  • Have to agree with Kangal here, we bought a Dimplex portable (http://www.dimplex.com.au/product/dimplex-3kw-reverse-cycle-… this one).

It was loud as a truck as well (mostly because you have to sit in front of it to get cool air), I have a tiny living room and it only cools whats right in front of it and thats really it. The room itself is ambient hot still. It definitely does NOT cool the room and very difficult to sleep with the noise.

I know a friend who said he had one that worked okay for a tiny bedroom? Not sure if true, but if I had to get a portable one I'd definitely go for a named brand as opposed to a random one, and I'd check for reviews of said device for the very least.

I have to say though, we recently paid 650 for window/wall airconditioner (square unit), and installed it into the wall ourselves. Was so much better to deal with. Might be worth telling the landlord you'll give him a few hundred for part of a proper one?

The cheap ones are absolute crap, only good for sitting in front of. I got one from bunnings years ago for $400 odd and ended up taking it back. I decided that if I was to have any chance of getting something that would work reasonably well I would need to look upmarket. Delonghi seemed to be the premium brand at the time so I got one from Harvey Norman for around $1100. It can actually cool a decent sized room if you turn it on before it gets stinking hot. It needs to be filled with water for maximum efficiency but can be run without. Noise isn't too bad, about the same as a wall unit, but it's only possible to sleep with it on if you use ear plugs. Seems to run a lot quieter without water.

I am using honeywell portable air conditioner more than a year and happy with the performance ( a bit noisy though).

  • I have a Kelvinator brand portable aircon and it's cold and not too noisy. It has a water reservoir which can get full overnight. Aircon is affected by ceiling height, size of room, windows etc. These units can cool a 3 x 3m room, the larger the room and presence of heat eg via walls or walls will slow down the cooling process. Note do not extend (ie make any longer) the exhaust duct as the units won't be able to work properly. The duct must be straight when the unit is running.

I have one but mine is 5.5kw i had a delonghi before and it was completely useless this is insanely better.

    worth every cent.

    • But it's expensive mate :(

You asked for the best and this i would definitely say is the best.

I was in a rental property and asked the landlord about aircon. They offered for a decent aircon in return for a modest increase in rent which we agreed on. Considering an installed decent split cycle aircon is about $2500, you expect payback in lets say 3 years (150 weeks) you would consider $20/w or $80/month increase to be fair. Keep in mind the landlord is also responsible for maintenance/repairs.

    • That's not so expensive! I'll give it a try ;)

" you expect payback in lets say 3 years " bet you are glad he does'nt use the same formula to work out overall rent versus value of house.

House payback is based in expected increase in value and rent combined and is largely linked to the property value (freehold) not a system that has limited lifespan with high ratio of maintenance compared to house value and upkeep. :P

        • @RobMel - Good news mate! After a lot of discussion with my landlord, he finally agreed to install a 4.2kW Aircon at my place with the below agreement,
          1. Additional $20/w ($85/m) on top of current rent
          2. Renewal of property agreement until next year Jan'2018.

I felt it's a pretty good deal as I can save some pennies during winter as well. Now, my question is what would be the power consumption of this huge 4.2kW machine?

          Cheers!

          @Sowny:
Really depends inputs idea temperature insulation and your preference. MAX Cost would be about $1.5 an hour ago current electricity price. As always keep windows closed , curtains owed when hot and don't set temp too low. 25-26C is still OK and won't drain your bank account my Aircon even on a 40C day runs only about 30% of the time.

        • @RobMel: I see. Even I thought of keeping it around 23-25.

Bought an Olimpia Splendid piu16 a few years ago and it works fine in a 20 m2 room as long as you turn it on before it gets above 30 deg C. Any portable aircon requires a sliding window or door for the hot air exhaust duct. Not cheap but worth every $$$.

  • Any recommendations for a very small room and will most likely anywahs be pointed at my single sized bed which is cornered by two walls so really i just need to cool like 4x4m max of space. The total room is shaped like a quadrilateral with measurements 2 x 3 x 3 x 5 m roughly with a window on the longest wall
