After a new Android phone that isn't too "smart"

My 65yo mum is after a new phone. She currently has an S4 and wants a new one, paid for outright. She doesn't use the phone for internet/games/facebook etc and her S4's battery drains in a day, which she hates. This is her list of what she's after:

  • Android OS
  • wants to access email
  • wants the camera to be really good
  • long battery life

Even if someone could point me in some direction eg what I should look for in a camera, I'd be super grateful! Thank you OzB'ers and merry Christmas!

  • Most of smart phones require to be charged within a day. Maybe she can buy a portable battery charger to use with a phone. Alternatively, I think Google new smartphone called Pixel which will match with her need even though it is pricey.

    • Thank you. I thought a longer battery life might have been wishful thinking. Tried to get her excited about the Pixel but the price tag put her off. I've tried teaching her how to close apps and turn off location settings but no good.

      • No worries. It is hard though, sometimes you cannot have both things at the same time. or maybe a phone case with battery attached on it.

        • Why don't you get her a New, Samsung-branded replacement battery?
And also get a portable battery charger.

Finally, to help make the phone easier for her to use, you could customise it.
Samsung's dropped support for the S4 anyways, so you could possibly go the route of xdc-developers.
There's some great roms out there. Even though the developers themselves are upgrading to newer devices.

  • +1

There are a lot of chinese phones as well as branded phones out there that pack a 3000mah battery (or 4000 mah, like the [LG X Power(http://www.gsmarena.com/lg_x_power-8133.php)) for example.

The LG X power goes for $299 from JB.

Here is a list of branded phones with big batteries (3300mah and bigger).

    Go for a galaxy s7
not the edge despite it's battery lasting longer the edge screen can be annoying

My s7 is a great phone with an amazing camera.

  • just camera and email? get a lumia

  • Oppo R9 / R9 Plus get a great rating for battery life - free on an 8GB plan $50/month on Woolies Mobile
But I still enjoy my original OnePlus One which still measures up well against new releases and can be had for $400 so well under the cost of a Pixel

  • I think the Lumia is a great idea
They are cheap, often have great cameras, long battery life and are easy to use.

Also the phone case with battery is a great idea. I have never had one, but was tempted years ago. Zerolemon were a good brand then.

An alternative is something in the Xiaomi Redmi range, but I wouldn't say the cameras are great.
They are between $150 and $350 depending on screen size which vary from 5 to 6.5 inches. I wouldnt recommend the 6.5 inch screen model.
The batteries are very big at least 4000mah.Considering your mother's needs the smaller the screen the longer the battery life. The actual battery life will vary, but if she doesn't use the GPS, wifi or internet I think she would get at least three days.
The MIUI OS is also well supported and has an integrated simple mode which makes everything big and easy to access, but could also be considered insulting. You can also just get a simple launcher for a similar effect.
I got one for my 85 year old grandmother.

  • I considered the moto Z play and the moto X force. Both have excellent battery life and pretty decent cameras

  • To get the most out of it you will have to set it u pl and turn some of the stuff off that is not needed.

But thw problem here is that android is too smart and will know everything she does.

I find gsmarena.com to have great revies and a real world test of battery life too which i use to gauge my next handset with and i went thw s5, can last a couple of days with min usage.
