Samsung 34" Curved UWQHD (3440x 1440) VA Monitor S34E790C $789 @ MSY

140

I've been paying attention to this monitor for a while, but never bought it because they usually went for $1k+. The main reason why I'm not 100% sold on this monitor is the 1 year warranty that samsung offers… Inexcusable for a monitor that has an RRP of 1000USD IMO. But my monitor just died, so i might just end up closing my eyes and picking this up. I also have a preference of quality VA panels over IPS, which leans me more towards this

Edit: Did anyone else pick it up for 588 this morning!?

Doesnt consumer protection over ride the 1 year warranty or something

    • +1

Using certain credit cards will add a year cover.

      • +1

This is separate to the consumer guarantee but good to know.

    • +1

      yeah/nah…

you have to convince an overseas manufacturer to abide by our consumer laws….pretty hard to do with out a retailer managing the warranty ive found

      • +3

You don't have to convince Samsung at all - you just need to convince MSY, it may be worth reminding them about their ACCC lawsuits…

It would certainly be reasonable to expect a $1000 computer monitor to last more than a year, I would definitely expect it to last at least 2 years and I would try and argue even longer than that - 3 years is pretty reasonable

        • +2

Yup, MSY as a 'supplier' of goods is responsible for ensuring that goods are of acceptable quality. AQ is based on a number of factors including price. You could argue that a computer monitor costing $1000 is not of AQ if it fails in less than 2 years, and MSY is liable to remedy it under the ACL.

However, not everyone will follow the written law…

      • +6

No, MSY are obliged to provide you a "reasonable" warranty under ACL. I'd imagine a monitor at this price is "should" last three years and so MSY would have to replace/refund/repair the product for that long.

What you and many other consumers are failing to realise is that warranties are snake oil. The cover a warranty claims to offer is already provided by ACL so there is no value in having one. Businesses like you thinking there's value where there isn't so you pay more.

Now of course MSY act like scum sometimes and claim to customers that they do not have rights and get fined by the ACCC like very recently and before that as well.

        • Warranties still serve a purpose but I agree there are those out there that use them in improper ways. E.g. offering extended warranty knowing full well it's covered by the consumer guarantee. Dodgy.

If our customers are educated then MSY will not try to deny their rights.

    • I've read of people have success claiming this with their TV's (since they only offer 1 year warranty as well), but it seems like they were done through the manufacturer. Which probably means that they have a degree of discretion, which doesn't really help to give me that peace of mind unfortunately

    • +1

This is correct. It's good to see consumers educating themselves about their rights and protections.

The warranty will be what you use if there is an issue in the first year but subsequently you would be covered by the consumer guarantee. You can claim this against he manufacturer (Samsung) OR the retailer (MSY).

      https://www.accc.gov.au/consumers/consumer-rights-guarantees…

The remedies you can seek from the retailer who sold you the product include a repair, replacement, or refund and in some cases compensation for damages and loss.

The retailer can’t refuse to help you by sending you to the manufacturer or importer.

You can claim a remedy directly from the manufacturer or importer

    It's even on sale!

TF! $120,000 after $30,000 discount? What am I buying, a house?

    • Wanted to buy three of them to put them next to each other but unfortunately the frame is to wide and that annoys me when I play minesweeper

      • Get an Ultrawide, you will not believe the level of immersion you get in Minesweeper!

      • Samsung has you covered, they have this tv that transforms into an ultrawide. Probably comes with a 1 year warranty.

I was looking at this monitor as well, but the reviews of subpar image quality turned me off - it has issues displaying clear text, supposedly. Which is a shame, because otherwise it seems to be a good monitor. Guess I'll wait for the reviews of their new C34F791 3440x1440 100Hz monitor.

    • I want that so bad! If the quality of my samsung quantum dot TV is anything to go by, that monitor should be an absolutely superb VA panel. But it took 2 years for this monitor to go to this reasonable price (that monitor has the same RRP), I'd wait but my monitor just died

      • But it took 2 years for this monitor to go to this reasonable price (that monitor has the same RRP)

        Yeah :/

      • It's a good price for the monitor. I'm going to get one, was going to get the LG 34UC79G-B, but this seems good enough.

        • +1

I might do that, the comments above have alleviated a fair amount of my worries with the warranty.

        • NVM, wrong model.

        • +1

@Hunga: 3 year warranty on the model from Samsung AU from what the
card which came with the monitor states.

Less warranty on remote and cords, but 3 years on the LCD @ 12 hours/day.

        • @MorriJ: Hmm, I think you're right. I first saw the 1 year warranty at mwave and I thought i confirmed it with a quick google. But looking back at it now, I think i might've read off the accessory section.

  • Not IPS

    • VA has better image quality than IPS ;)

      • I currently own both a BenQ VA and a LG IPS. IPS is far better than VA in my experience.

        • +1

Not all VA panels are the same, and not all IPS panels are the same. It's hardly a strict rule of one is better than the other

        • +1

Not all VA panels are created equally and not all IPS panels are created equally. This panel is one of the better VA panels, I saw a comparison with a similarly priced IPS LG panel and this monitor has a 100 sRGB rating while being 1 point off in adobe rgb. All while having a much better contrast ratio which is to be expected as VA panels have better blacks.

There's a good reason why high end samsung and sony tvs (which both went with VA panels) are better received than high end LG (IPS) tvs. Quality VA panels can produce comparable picture quality, all while having better contrast ratio. Not to mention it doesn't have IPS glow an inherent issue with IPS displays, which gets worse the bigger the IPS panel is.

        • @Hunga:

all while having better contrast ratio. Not to mention it doesn't have IPS glow an inherent issue with IPS displays, which gets worse the bigger the IPS panel is.

^ why my next display is going to be VA, instead of the IPS I have now. After having true blacks on my OLED phones, the black levels of IPS are atrocious.

    • Yes, it says VA in the title, what's your point?

  • +1

be careful. take up extended warranty or purchase with credit card that includes extended warranty. samsung has terrible service and WILL NOT look at any issue twice without involving court. ive got this monitor, its awesome. i got it with a 4yr extended warranty.
my last monitor blacked out, i had to deliver it to the repair shop (even tho its a major fault which allows me to choose a refund). then i heard nothing for 2 weeks, then it rocked up randomly one day with 500 shipping stickers on it and no information of what they did. I still have that old monitor, its resolution is always wrong and the picture is pixelated constantly however samsung have "already fixed the issue" and i am no longer entitled to service.

point of the story. get extended warranty, and do not expect samsung to abide by theirs.

    great monitor :D

    • That sucks. I've had a very good experience dealing with them recently, but that was within the 1 year warranty with the tv i bought. A red line appeared 9 months in, I called up samsung and they sent a technician the next day. Technician said it was a faulty panel and samsung called me the day after giving me options including a free upgrade from our series 7 to a series 8 since they didn't have anything similar to the series 7 we had. 2 Days after we agreed to have it upgraded, the red line disappears on the tv we had lol… They still came and picked up the old tv and gave us the new tv.

A half ass'd "fix" shouldn't be a reason to deny service, if i were you i certainly wouldn't have settled with that.

      • There was only one way i was getting out of that situation, and thats by going through ACCC or something. I couldn't be without a monitor for another 2 weeks either. was a shit position to be in.

glad to hear they do home service with TVs.

  • Holy fackk balls!!! There must have been a pricing error, i just p8cked it up for 588!!!!!!

Now i'm tempted to buy 2 for a dual setup

    • Looks like pricing error. Fixed to $789 again

    • Did you get to keep it for that price?!

    • Damn..I was busy and did a pickup order. Doubt they'll honour it..sigh..

  • +1

I'm incredibly impressed with this monitor and getting it for 588 made it all the more sweeter.

If anyone else got one, I highly suggest you tinker with the monitor before you start using it. The out of the box settings is horrible compared to my previous dell monitors that died.

The brightness setting out of the box is awfully high at 100%, not sure why anyone would think it's a good idea as it makes the picture very washed out, so turn it way down. I've turned mine down to around 35 and switch the gamma setting to the 2nd mode.

  • I ordered one yesterday @$588

Just waiting for confirmation so I can go pick it up.
