Insurance after an Accident at Work

Hi, 12 mo that ago, I had an at fault accident while driving a work car owned and insured by my employer. I recently bought a new car an d went to get an insurance quote and my premium was double with the accident once I reported it that I had a claim.

My question is, is there. Loop hole that because my accident occurred in someone else's car on someone else's policy, do I actually have to declare it?

Thanks

Depends how the claim was processed by your employer but generally it's the employer making the claim and not you. Maybe speak to your employer about how they lodged the claim

  • AFAIK… When an insurance co asks if you have had a previous claim it is referring to a policy held in your name. Check the wording on the application, some do vary.
As the car was owned by the employer and they held the insurance policy I can't see how it could be considered.
Personally I would not declare it as a claim but it is up to you with what you finally do.

  • If I make a claim from Suncorp and then renew insurance via Aami saying that I never had any claim before. If I need to make claim once again for another event, how Aami could find out whether I had previously made claim and didn't declare it during insurance sign up?

    • Accident and claim history is generally shared between insurance providers.

Especially brands belonging to the same company.

  • If you did not have insurance and did not lodge the claim, then I think you can say "I never had a claim before". But I don't think you can say "I was never in an at fault accident".

    Why would you risk it?

You've had an at fault claim, so somewhere an insurance company has a record of that. If you tell your insurance company that you haven't had a claim to get a cheaper premium and then need to make a claim, what's to say that the insurance company won't find your previous claim?

The next post then becomes, "Insurance company claims my policy is invalid because I lied on my initial application… please help!"

OP just needs to answer the question truthfully.
If it asks if they have had an at fault accident, then they say yes.
If it asks if OP has made a claim they can truthfully say no.

      • If you are lucky then the question will get you out of the predicament, but only if the question is answered truthfully.

  • Sign up for the insurance first and don't report that you have a claim. Call them up after this and advise them that you have one under the employer's name. The amount is significantly less than doing it yourself online.

  • There is no loop hole. If you are an at fault driver then there is a claim made against you as the driver, regardless of who actually owns the insurance policy. As others have stated this would be held on record somewhere, and insurance companies love it when you omit information from them as it voids your policy!

  • Declare it, or call the company and tell them. You don't want them to reject your future claims because you didn't declare this accident.

  • I was in the exact situation.

Some insurer's told me it's any accident regardless of name.

NRMA said it was only if I had a policy in my name as work would of been the entity claiming the accident and therefore it was as if I had never claimed.
