  • This is an old model so which is better?

    RX-V367 for $474 from JB

    OR

    RX-V465 for $545.36 delivered

    • The V367 doesn't support HD audio decoding, which would be a deal breaker for me since I watch a lot of blu-ray movies.

I would also be looking at a model with Audyssey - which neither of these Yamaha amps have.

I recently picked up this Denon 1610 for $599 - http://www.justklapp.com/products/Amplification/AV%20Receive…. The main thing it's lacking is 3D, but imo 3D is a big waste of time - for the moment at least.

Edit - I did a bit more searching and found that the V367 actually does accept uncompressed PCM audio. So if your bluray player can do the decoding and provide the amp with PCM, you should be fine.

  • +2

the RX-V367 is 3d capable ,the RX-V465 is not. so if you have a 3d tv then get the RX-V367. you may also want to check on what audio decoders are available for each receiver , its normally more expensive if it has truehd and dtsma. but if you find a cheap alternative that has pcm you can still get uncompressed sound without the big budget

  • The 367 is the replacement for the 365. It has HDMI 1.4, which has some cool features such as audio downlink (so you don't need an audio cable out from the TV to the receiver when using the TV's digital tuner), as well as built in Ethernet and some 3D support*.

The 465 is the older version of the 467, which is the next model up. The key thing for me would be the extra two HDMI ports, which would almost be enough to convince me to buy the 465 over the 367.

*I am not sure about exactly what is required to support 3D, for example TiVo, which is HDMI 1.2 claims to support 3D, so maybe there is something else required.

    • There are different transmission formats for 3D, a HDMI 1.3 AVR (i.e RX-V465) may support 3D from FTA TV broadcast etc, but will most likely not support 3D from 3D Blu-ray player.

Note: The 367 does not have Ethernet support or Audio Return Channel(ARC), so you would still need optical cable from TV to AVR.

The 467 and above have ARC.

You should be able to get the 465 for under $500 from retailers that have them left without the need for coupon codes etc, some even include the iPod dock for free at the moment. http://www.rio.com.au/product.aspx?productid=457

      • thanks, really informative.

unfortunately i think the ipod deal finished in june.

Any idea how much the 667 will be? i find it hard to swallow that the 665 was AUD1399 rrp in australia while 549USD rrp in the states.

        • If you go to the specials page on Rio.com.au it still has the free iPod dock listed with the 465.
Note this is the iPod dock that plugs into the back of the AVR, not the free wireless ipod dock that was being given way by Yamaha in June.

The 667 should be around $1099-1199 RRP going by the prices of the x67 models released so far.

  • I own one of these, which I bought 5 weeks ago for $599 (display model). In June, the best price you could get was around $649 for a non-display model. $489 is a really good price. This is a good receiver with support for DTS HD / Master Audio. Its total harmonic distortion (THD) is lower (<0.06% according to spec) than other brands in this price range (Pioneer, Sony, Onkyo), which are typically around 0.07% or higher.

    • +1

The THD for both models mentioned above is the same, they both use similar circuitry and low quality chip amps, you need to go up to the 765 in current models or the 667 in the new range when it comes out to get discrete amplifier design that gives better THD and overall improved performance

    • Somehow my message got chopped. Apparently it doesn't escape "less than" characters.

I mean to say: Its total harmonic distortion (THD) is lower (less than 0.06% according to spec) than other brands in this price range (Pioneer, Sony, Onkyo), which are typically around 0.07% or higher.

      • Where did you get that spec from?

The product specs has it listed as "1 kHz, 0.9% THD, 6Ω 105W"

The Sanyo chip amps that are used in the 465 have a THD rating of 0.8%, so it would be impossible for the amp to have better THD than the chip used for the power amp stage.

  • Some very good info in this thread - good work from OzBargainers.

  • I recently bought the Onkyo SR-508 7.1 from Hardly Normal for $560, 12 months interest free and deferred payments.

For an extra $70 you get 7.1, Dolby IIz, IIx and Zone 2 powered output. Slightly higher output @ 160w.

    Just giving up some options.

  • I just bought the 7.1 RX-V1065 for $890 delivered, received it yesterday so I haven't had a chance to play with it properly… but from what I have seen (and heard)- WOW. Stereo in 'Pure Direct' mode is amazing.

Yamaha's equivalent of Audyssey is YPAO, I just set up the included microphone on a tripod, then it sends out test tones and figures out the best settings for your room. Magic!

This receiver comes with preouts so if I decide to add another amp in the future, I can.

This has 4 HDMI in with 1080p upscaling. Zone 2 which means you can have a 5.1 DVD running in your living room, and the radio running in the kitchen. But I have chosen to use Zone 2 for 4 Aura bass transducers that I am installing into the couch (I got these at $10 each plus $15 postage!) Can't wait to FEEL the BASS in my movies haha. For those of you that don't know about bass transducers, instead of using a cone and pushing air like a subwoofer, it has a heavy magnet that shakes whatever it is attached to. (Think about gunshots, big explosions, etc… all the low frequency effects are felt THROUGH YOUR BODY, without having to crank your subwoofer up and annoying the neighbours and girlfriend)

Girlfriend is away at the moment so I am free to modify the couch without nagging… ;o)

    • The Audyssey / YPAO is one of the best features of newer receivers, most people don't have a SPL meter or a good enough ear to calibrate their own system, and as you've said the result is magic :)

      • actually, the YPAO on my Yamaha 465 is something I was not completely happy with. Apparently (according to some internet sources) this model tends to put crossover at 200Hz no matter what (even for full-range speakers) - I manually lowered it. The automatic equalizer settings weren't very good either, so I switched the equalizer off. But the balance and distance adjustments were perfect. This receiver is 5.1, but is able to decode 7.1 (sending the other two channels to a line-out for an optional additional amplifier). I contemplated the Onkyo 7.1, but its THD was a bit higher, and I don't require additional wattage for my 110 watts speakers.

        • I've never used YPAO but would have imagined it would be just as good as the Audyssey.

        • choosing one amplifier over another in the same class, based on a lower THD is just ridiculous. its like buying one car over another because of 0.1L/100km of consumption difference. you simply will not notice!

    • how and where might i ask? i'm more than interested in this receiver too!

      • I got the receiver from Eastwood Hifi. I searched prices for importing from Singapore, and Eastwood were cheaper by a couple hundred dollars. So it was a no-brainer to buy it locally and get 2yr manufacturer warranty.

I can't wait to finish work and play with it tonight haha
