PowerColor RED DRAGON Radeon RX 480 4GB = $261.00 AUD Shipped @ Newegg

430

Unbeatable price, keep in mind the cooling is very limited. This is best suited for those planning to install a water block

Here are some comparisons between a Radeon 480 and a Geforce 1060;

AMD technology is powering current and next generation consoles, has had a lot of input into PC gaming API's such as Vulkan and DirectX 12 so I would expect it to keep it's lead in next generation PC games

Limited cooling? Fans right over the heatsink. What is "limited cooling" are the stock cards with the fan right at the end #my2c

    • Looking at this card and comparing to other aftermarket cards, the cooler/heatsink is much less beefy and smaller. Also Checking through some reviews, it does idle at higher temps and under load so look else where if your unsure unless you are taking OP's advice of using a water block.

i think by limited you mean OC potential, as for stock theres absolutely no issues unless noise is a concern

    • from what i've read, stock ones are quite limiting. Because it doesn't cool as well, the card will limit its boost gpu clock to stop overheating.

Guys what I mean by limited cooling is that there is only one non-blower fan and no heat-pipes either. Most RX 480 cooling solutions have 2 fans. If you read the customer reviews you will see that the card idles at high temperatures. This does not mean that the stock cooling will make the card unusable but it might be worth spending an extra $20-30 and getting a RX 480 with dual fans especially if you have a case with limited airflow

This is just my opinion and still a great card for a bargain price

    • Definitely a good deal if you're going to aftermarket cool it.

As far as general use in a standard ATX/mATX case it'll be fine, it'll be perfectly fine.

      Overclocking or a in console-killer mini-ITX case, however…

A guy on this forum bought it and said his idled at 80 degrees. Thats nasty.

It could definitely be a one-off case, though.

    • There is no way that could be normal. Most modern cards are capable of idling in the 30-40 degree range with the fan(s) turned off completely, including my own XFX RX480.

  • Even comes with a back plate. Great deal.

I just purchase MSI one for $299 with Amex deal. Great price the PowerColor one is cheaper.

    • Plus the one you linked to is 8GB which makes a world of difference with the RX480

  • I'm thinking post Xmas sales will make the rx480 similarly priced to the this.

In two minds about this tbh, it's in my cart, just haven't checked out.

  • RED DRAGON, yet the card is mainly black :p

it turns red when in use coz it gets so hot

  • Here is an updated review of the current performance offered from these two cards (with the above data obtained less than a month ago)

…..With a very recent interesting review:

Just take wccftech with a grain of salt though, as frequently the are full of BS when it comes to rumours and leaks etc, but in this case the review seems to be on solid ground.

  • Just received mine, it's actually a 480 8GB card :-P

    • is it actually the dual fan 8gb version??

      • No, you take the 4GB sticker off and can see it's a re-bagged 8GB card, you just need to slightly mod the firmware

        • why would they do that? Does it offer the performance of the 8gb versions?

also, if you aren't too busy, would it be alright if you had a look at the PCB? I'm planning on installing a waterblock but I'm not sure if this is a reference PCB and I cannot find it ANYWHERE on the internet.

@chair: So it actually has 8GB of RAM installed, you just need to mod the firmware to access it. It had a backplate so I can't see the PCB, not gonna pull it out, sorry

        • @marchi: all good, thanks for the tip! thanks again for giving us this fantastic deal!
