What to Get from The USA?

Hi all,

Relative is coming over from SF and ask me if I want anything from there.

Any goods worth getting from there rather than buying in AU due to big price difference and/or availability?

Food?Gadgets?Computer parts, etc?

Suggestions and inputs are most welcome.

Thanks

In n Out burger x 10.. that is all

    • I dont think it will survive the flight etc..??

      • Maybe not 100% but if they freeze it then bring it in a cooler bag it might retain some of its crispness.

Source: have done this with various other burgers home made and store bought for long road trips and travels etc

Depending on your love for the food you may like it or not

Some foods fare better than others. IMO anything with a lot of sauce and salads will suffer like maybe a subway because sauce dries but plain stuff like cheese burgers and bacon burgers will do ok

Eh it ultimately depends on the situation.. ymmv

  • audiophile gadgets. Maybe get yourself some high end Bose QC35s?

  • If you're in need of a phone get one there, an iPhone is a lot less than buying it in Australia.

  • Some items don't ship to Australia from Amazon so maybe check your wish list there?

As for Christmas presents there are tonnes just depends what your relatives are willing to spend I suppose unless this is an out of your pocket expense then I guess whatever you need ATM.

Personally I would probably buy a laptop or new tablet or phone.

  • Just be aware of the duty-free limits - $900 per adult, $450 per child - or you'll have to pay GST and possibly import duties. So something like a new laptop/phone could be a problem.

    Now, if it were used…

    • Just tell the relative to open the packaging.

And here I am trying to hint without outright saying it.

Currently we are in the US. Definitely an iPhone if you are after one. Make sure this is GSM unlocked version. Bought a 6s 32gb for my daughter. Upgraded from 5s for $673 AUD. We don't have 32 gb in Australia.
Bose QC 35 are better priced in Australia when you get deals. US retail price is $349 plus taxes.
Clothes, shoes and items of personal hygiene are not included in the passenger allowance. Allowance of all persons traveling together can be clubbed into a larger allowance.
Have you considered Amazon Echo and Echo Dot? These are the current years rage product. Amazon itself has run out, but some stock is available at Best Buy. Quality clothes are value for money if you know your sizes. Levi's is currently having 30% off store wide. PS4 with some games packaged are going for $249 plus taxes. Best Buy is throwing in a $50 voucher with it.

  • Clothing, to take advantage of the reversed seasons and generally cheaper pricing for brand names.
Hot sauce/BBQ sauce if you are a connoisseur.
My kids love American candy they see on TV, though it is now readily available in shops here at a price, but can be had very cheaply at US supermarkets.

Ralph Lauren polo shirts. They have lost the plot with pricing in Australia and never seem to go on sale anymore. At the outlets in USA you can get them for around $20-$40 all the time. Sometimes even cheaper.

  • I wish someone could bring me quality cookware from the US! You should, if you need a set.

    • Do you have recommendations regarding the brand and or model? How much would they cost

  • Just browse Amazon…

  • Clothes - Hollister, Old Navy, etc. these brands are hard to find in australia.
Sneakers - Basketball shoes (lebron, kd's, curry's, air jordan retros) wide selection in US nike stores compared to here plus cheaper i think.
Foods - Chocolates like 3 musketeers and Baby ruth which are hard to find here in australia.

  • An Amazon Echo. That device is awesome.

    • I bought a few Echo dots. What am I supposed to do with these though, apart from playing music through Bose speakers?

    • Contemplating echo or google home..

      • Looking at the reviews, I now wish that I had bought a google home. It is much more capable and would likely be more useful in Australia.

        • What do you mainly use yours for?

        • @AlienC: I have not setup yet. It is a Christmas gift to myself. It is Christmas Day here now. Although the only use I can see at the moment is to play music. Need to do a bit more research into it. I guess I am a typical Ozbargainer, buy first and ask questions later. There is a very long thread on whirlpool on Echo.

        • @spal:

Afaik it's only a voice command home automation got which is fine but home automation wise we are not really there yet imho

Still can't tell my vacuum to go out and pull the weeds yet haha lol on a very weird incline terrain with steps

I guess it would be good for lights and air-conditioning though if I had the money to run some.
