Did I Get Scammed on eBay?

Haven't had much luck recently with eBay…

So I bought a Mayflash controller adaptor for my Wii U/PC from a Chinese seller.

The item took way longer than the the month or so quoted so I opened a ticket with the resolution centre. The seller apologised and said they definitely sent it.

An item then did arrive a couple of days later, but it was the wrong item. Some kind of ribbon cable with a few connections, looks like for a laptop or something.

So I contacted the seller and they asked for a pic of the item. I sent it. They again apologised and offered to resend the item if I close the resolution request thing as they "get punished" by eBay if it is open too long.

It's late, I'm tired and just want them to send the item, so I clicked close without reading it properly… as I clicked it I saw the text that I can't open it again if I close it… too late…

Soooo has the seller scammed me? Or is it true, they get "punished" by eBay if it is left open too long?

Hi in the case of you dont get the correct item usually seller refund and you can repurchase.

You still have paypal to dispute. Ask the seller to refund and you can repurchasr.

    • I believe once you open a dispute in eBay it links to the Paypal transaction. Once the buyer closes the eBay claim is will close the Paypal claim… You cannot then go to Paypal and make a new claim for the same item if you already initiated via eBay.

That's my understanding of the system.

  • Always act as if the seller is more responsible for anything of fault in your purchase.

As a buyer you are supposed to get what you paid for not the other way around.

I have been somewhat slightly also scammed on eBay.

Bought a laptop charger that looked full and complete in the picture received half of it so followed it up opened a resolution request for denied same thing then went through PayPal and got it fixed.

Then with PayPal and keep sending emails or asking them what went wrong and clearly state your case or problem then they will make amendments to approve you.

Sorry not sure if they get punished or not if the resolution request is left open too long. I would assume they might do or not better that someone else with more seller experience answers this question.

    Sorry.

no, you f%&ked up by clicking with out reading.

the seller asked if you could do something (because he doesn't want a dispute because it is time consuming for him and having makes his seller rating look bad) and you did it.

how is that him scamming you?

take some personal responsibility for your own action.

    and open a paypal dispute

  • I've gotten into a few of these situations and I've learnt (the hard way) that it's best to keep the dispute open until the seller completes the transaction (ie. you receive the item successfully AND it works as you expect it to).

As the buyer, I believe if you pay for something, you should receive it (and it should be working), regardless of whether or not it affects the seller's rating or whatever. It's not your responsibility for that and they, as the seller, should take full responsibility to keep their customers happy.

At this point, as cold as it sounds, good luck. I hope the seller completes his obligation to send you the item and it arrives to you and works as expected.

As others have mentioned, you can still dispute by PayPal as they've lifted the purchase dispute time to 3 months now (I believe so?), unlike previously when it was only 28 days.

On the couple of occasions a seller has promised to re-send an item to me, they never have. I insist on refunds now, I can always re-order with new timeframes on disputes.

I am the opposite and have received the item the 3 or 4 times it has happened to me over the years.
But usually $2 cables or similar insignificant value where it cost me next to nothing to trust them, and them very little to be honest.
Pleasingly, an item (a battery) did go missing a couple of months ago, and the seller sent me two as recompense for the delay, unasked.

yes. ebay calls it Cases closed without seller resolution.

The very slow shipping time often makes the Chinese items difficult to resolve. If the ebay cutoff is 45 days, often the items take 30-35 days to arrive. I don't quite see how return shipping can be expected faster than the original shipping. I ordered some glass LCD screens, they arrived very late in almost no packaging and very broken. Useless broken glass. The seller just spent his time begging for a one third refund. I sent them back and he pretends he never got them. By that time 45 days was well over. I wrote it off as a lesson, but sellers dragging out the resolution process until the 45 days does seem to be a technique.

The seller didnt scam you, you simply made an unwise decision.

  • They've said that they have shipped the item again on the 23rd, so I guess it's just a waiting game now! No big deal, just a $15 item. At least I learnt my lesson lol.

  • Next time never close the dispute until it's resolved to your satisfaction or if it turns out that Ebay rules not in your favour. In the latter case, they will close the case on your behalf anyway. And someone has earlier mentioned correctly, you cannot choose to open a Paypal dispute once you've elected Ebay and the case is closed. It's either or. This was confirmed to me as I had the same experience recently.
