Saw the "Bought a Console for Your Kids Present? Plug It in and Update It Now!" post and reminded me of last year buying a Nintendo New 3DSXL for my son that does not come with a charging cable. Packaging did say AC adapter sold separately but i thought it would have come with a usb cable at the very least. If it wasn't for the fact I had an older NDSXL my son would only been able to play the portable console for a short time before having to wait until shops were open to buy a charger.
Nintendo 3DSXL Does Not Come with Charging Cable. AC Adapter Sold Separately

Nah mate, its awesome.
As soon as the battery runs out, you're meant to throw it away and buy a new one.I think you've confused Nintendo with Apple ;-)
can someone please explain why Nintendo have done this?
Apparently, their reasoning is that most people who buy their consoles are upgrading, therefore they don't need to supply an extra cable. I got caught out at the counter when the lady told me that the console doesn't have one and recommended I spend another $10 to buy an adapter and usb cable to charge it.
It's pretty stupid really, it leaves a sour taste for anyone who uses Nintendo consoles for the first time. I guess new customers are not important to them?
by that logic, they should have including power supply for the wiiu as everyone was upgrading.
funny that the nes/snes shared the same power supply though.
Can confirm that the N64 also shares the same power supply as the SNES. I remember testing it when I was little.
@ronnknee: really? i skipped the n64, but i can confirm the GameCube was a different power supply.
To make money. So you will buy the charger separately and give them an extra $15. Kind of like how Apple cuts out connection ports and adapters and wants you to buy them separately.
I once bought a nice USB 3DS charging cable at Daiso for $2.80 in case anybody is looking for one. Still, it's an odd approach nintendo have taken the past few years with these
Interesting that Daiso sells it. You can also purchase it from eBay/AliExpress for around a dollar.
And wait 2-4 weeks for it to arrive.
perhaps cutting cost, forcing people to buy their charger.
it makes the consoles appear cheaper to buy as well. every dollar counts when your selling millions of units.
that's why they did it…. maximise profits and undercut the competition!
…what competition?
mobile phones?
@godofpizza: depends….the 3ds has been around for a while and the vita was possibly considered to be a rival when they first decided pricing for the 'new' 3ds….. plus it is still technically in competition with every other console due to being technically cheaper….
PS Vita absolutely DESTROYS 3DS in the hardware department though. I still find it crazy that the 3DS costs as much as it does. It feels like a toy compared to Vita.
Sony should of hired nintendo's marketing team….. Plus they seem not to stand by their product in the west :(
it is strange that they do that. But anywhere that you buy a console WILL tell you that you need to purchase one. (usually $14.95)
not at Big "UU" they won't!
b@stards!
I've seen this mentioned in reviews but only now realise the device doesn't have a micro USB socket, and needs a proprietary connector.
Thanks.
Nvidia went the same way with their new repackaged Nvidia Shield Tab K1.
Makes sense since most people I would assume has a micro USB charger (in Nvidia's use case scenario).
I guess with Nintendo's proprietary charger one it would be a little more niche but I can understand it.
Millions of units sold can equal millions of unnecessary extra waste sold it most buyers are already hard core Nintendo fans.
Is this a new thing? My 3DS XL came with an AC adapter.
Yes, it started with the 'new' 3DS
Unfortunately I jumped from DS to New3DS, so my two DS power adapters aren't compatible. I support them not wasting materials on redundant power packs when I have like seven USB chargers in the house, but I think they should have included the USB cable for charging.
Does this only apply to the Aust/EU version? I recently bought a US version and that came with the USB cable…
Thats odd! I bought one just over a year ago and it came with a cable
Probably not the "new" version.
I didn't mind, it meant a cheaper system, as i own a lot of 3DSs and 3DS XLs collector reasons, i just have to have every pokemon one i can get my hands on.
I have 3 chargers for my 11 consoles, Luckily they stopped making pokemon faceplates for now…. and this gen, they only had 2 limited edition consoles instead of the 3 from X&Y.
That's pretty crappy.
