Buying larger size worming tablets and reducing dose size for small dogs

We are the proud new owners of a lovely little dog and of course now I'm looking into worming/flea control etc.
I think the solution I'm leaning towards is using Nexgard and Interceptor monthly tablets.
So doing a search, I see that there is a combo available here http://www.ovedshorseandpetstore.com.au/nexgard-interceptor-… which would work out to $15.83 per month ($94.99 for a 6 month 'orange' supply for a small dog)

But is there any reason I can't get the 'yellow' packs, for a bigger dog, and give a quarter of a dose each month instead? The kilos would work out to the same ratio and it would end up being $4.79 per month instead.

There is a pack available for even bigger dogs, but the ratios wouldn't divide as evenly.

The only potential issue I can see is that we have to assume that all ingredients are distributed evenly, but I can't see why they wouldn't be.

Any thoughts?

I'll ask my father-in-law, he is a vet.

edit : he couldn't give an answer as he's never had dogs since he served in Vietnam.

I reckon the main issue is storage after you've opened the blister or whatever it is. If it absorbs a significant amount of water vapour from the air, might affect the efficacy of it.

I usually get the ones you squeeze onto their neck. I've got two small dogs and use half the quantity for each. Definitely saves a lot of money!

My Vet advises me to do that. I split a tablet in two. Just check the suggested weight ranges.

You are assuming that the active ingredient is evenly distributed in the tablet/chew to allow splitting. This is not always the case, which is why it is suggested that you do not split some tablets/pills - especially for human consumption.

    • that's what she said

I have 3 small dogs and I split these things.

Thanks for the comments everyone. Our vet is fine with the concept so seems like a plan to me.
