Buying a Demo OR New Car (Post Christmas Deals)

Through many sites & forums I've found that there's quite a few people about to purchase new and demo vehicles post Christmas.

With that being said what car are you looking at? What's the price point you hope to achieve?

Here's my aim:

[Demo]2016 Hyundai i30 SR Premium Auto MY17 $26K
[Demo]2016 Hyundai Elantra Elite Auto MY17 $25K

Will pull the trigger on whatever comes first, hope that's in the "good deal" price point as ive had a few interactions that suggest this.

I would be more inclined to go for the Demo Corolla as they match up nicely and it saves you extra $$$
Someone told me that there's a lot fee or something that is applied on the beginning on the calendar year and that's why dealerships drop their prices. Not too sure about that as I would of assumed it was because of the calendar year and the vehicles becoming "last years" model

  • As above, wait til January, then the cars are "last year's models"

Same discounting happens now, just that in 2017 you get less choice. TBH by the time January/February rolls around, there's less push towards clearing the rest. After all, end of December is end of month, and it's all about maximising the monthly figures.

If it was me and I was looking at a demo car, I'd push dealers to see how close a brand new one could be had. If the difference is minimal, then feel free to decide, but if it's new for the price of a demo… well you've done well

Just be careful of what you're buying, many dealers (looking at you Mitsubishi/Hyundai/Kia) licence their cars to hit targets likely a few months ago, so just be mindful of the first registration date and warranty date

      • I would have thought that for run of the mill cars like Toybishidais there would be plenty of stock to make deals on?

        • Depends on the dealerships, but most wanna clear them this month, not have stock carry-over to next year

        • @Spackbace:

Fair call. Just seems a lot of the Sydney dealers seem to have masses of stock come January - well they did last year when I was looking at cars.

        • @nafe:

As I said, depends on the dealership/manufacturer. Some prefer to clear the yard, some can't help that they have a stockpile, and likely demo the shit out of them to claim all bonuses, and to make their EOY figures look better

  • 2016 "Run-Out" sales.
Also some good "Hail Sales" early in the new year (after the summer storm season)

Ex Demo Sales are a good buy IMHO.

A fair amount of people mention that January is the best time to push dealers for a car as it is meant to be a relatively low sales time for them. But in answer to you actual question, they're similar but different cars. I personally would go the Elantra.

    • They are the same, Elantra is an i30 sedan

  • Just purchased a MY16 Mitsubishi Lancer GSR Manual demo (but only had 12kms when we took delivery, manufactured in October, registered in Nov 20th) for the Mrs last week for $21,500. Pretty happy with the deal, since around that price the other competitor cars either lacked the fancy tech stuff or the power. Trying to get something we liked from Hyundai/Toyota/Honda pushed us to the 25,000 ceiling, and we didn't want to spend that much for an A to B daily drive. Plus we have always had Mitsubishis and they have been good cars for us, and Lancers have been there for a long time and pretty reliable.
