ASUS Vivotab Note 8 Windows 8 Tablet with Stylus $188 Y/N? Advice for alternatives

Can anyone who knows about Windows Tablets let me know if the ASUS Vivotab Note 8 is any good ?I'm considering it as a present for my dad who is in his 60's y.o. and is back at Uni. All he is studying is Classics/ancient languages in other words he won't be designing jumbo jets or nuclear reactors with it.

Now $188 WAS $299. Intel Quad Core (Up to 1.86GHz). 2GB RAM LPDDR3. 64GB SSD

  • I bought one last year or the year before - with in about half a year the digitiser for the pen failed and after much research it seems to be a common hardware issue (I'm guessing repairs would be costly) so it's been reduced to a regular windows tablet now. If that's not too big an issue with you it's a great little tablet- speed is decent and screen is not ultra high res but clear enough to watch a movie or get work done. Battery life is fine to last a whole day at a time and speakers are also surprisingly nice. The only other thing I'd mention is that it has no ports except the micro usb charging port.

    • The $50 Unisurf Tablet I bought was a pain to use due to the 2Gb RAM.
It was just generally very slow and multitasking anything was borderline unusable.

I'd be looking at a something with minimum 4Gb RAM, a larger screen (especially for an older person), a keyboard and at least 1 full size USB port.
      ASUS Transformer maybe?

      • That's a good point- the 10 inch screen can be quite difficult to use due to its size, especially for someone older or someone with larger fingers

    • thanks

It wasn't the RAM, 2GB is fine for Android.

    • Agreed, but it's insufficient for Windows 8 or 10 which is what we're talking about here.

  • I got a Chuwi Hi8 pro, for $120
Its runs win 10 and android good
cons- lower end of battery life and pathetic speaker.
    But otherwise loving it heaps!

    • Where from?

      • Aliexpress 😀

  • I had this, had to return it after it bricked itself when I tried to wipe it (it's a known issue). It's okay if you're on a really tight budget, you really need windows and a stylus, and don't mind the tiny screen (like super tiny if you've got all the word or excel toolbars showing).

I wouldn't recommend it if he uses reading glasses. A 14" or larger HP or Lenovo laptop will probably cost at least $350, but if he's typing essays he'll appreciate the larger screen and the keyboard. Or look at a Chromebook?
