Phones on a 12 month contract?

Hi all, I was talking to a mate at work and he mentioned that he is on a 12 month Optus plan with a phone (i.e. not a SIM only plan). Obviously the monthly cost is greater to accomodate this.
I looked online and didnt see anything like this, and in the Optus store I visited they told me they no longer do such a thing.

Curious if anyone has seen something similar? I couldn't find much.

PS in case it matters, my work allows me to bill my phone bill back to them to a certain $ value. I'd rather be on a 12 month contract.

    12 months is not long enough for the provider to make any money off the customer and if they did, the phone repayment plan is usually fairly high to accommodate the cost of the device itself.

    what kind of phone is he using anyway? If it's a flagship like a Samsung S7, which is a $700 device, that ends up being $700 divided by 12 months = $59 dollars a month repayment for the phone only, and not including call / data allowance. He'd end up paying a pretty ridiculous amount a month.

      He has an iPhone. I guess a 7, but I dont know, I didnt think to ask.

      He pays $160 (I think) a month. Which, I suppose, is by no means a bargain, but he being able to charge it back to work seems to do him well.

        You'd probably have to go through some business channel and negotiate a custom plan with someone high ranking like a store manager or area manager. Most likely the 12 month plan is not available for your average consumer and they don't advertise it anywhere.

    You can cancel or opt out of an Optus 24 month plan anytime. You just need to pay the remaining handset cost.
    Also after 12 months you can hand in you phone + $99 and get a new phone + 24 month contract.
    Apart from this I am not aware of a 12 month plan.

    He would be on a sim only plan with phone instalment.
    Both Optus and Vodafone do it.

    The plan is a contracted 12 m plan
    The phone is full rrp of phone divided by 12 instalments.
