First Time You Used a Mechanical Keyboard

My question is, the first time you typed on a mechanical keyboard, what was your experience like, what was your reaction like?

Do you enjoy the response time and sound the keyboard makes?

can you go back to membrane keyboard?

What switches do you have?

Did you purchase it, to game on, type on or general use?

  • I went from gel razer lycosa to corsair k70 rgb. At first I thought mechanical was umm too different. But after a couple of days, I can't go back. Gel just seems like absolute crap.

All my keyboards were mechanical till about 1990…

    • Same here. I started with mechanical KB in early 90's. Hated the noise so much that I liked membrane when they came out.

I only very recently bought my first mechanical and I was surprised at how much I like it and the level of errors in my typing meaning I saw a huge improvement (though this mightve been due to me really hating the last membrane keyboard I was using). I will never buy a membrane based keyboard again. If you type a lot I would definitely recommend trying one.

Yes although I'm bashing the keys without meaning to ATM as I get used to using a new mechanical. I need to get used to how light the keypresses can be and it will be much quieter.

can you go back to membrane keyboard?

    Nope

    What switches do you have?

Cherry MX Red. I want to try Cherry MX Brown or another switch which has a "click" or "bump" when the key is actuated.

Gaming and general use (I don't type that much).

  • Started with blues but switched to browns (it will annoy family, roommates, etc.). Got them just for typing, but using a membrane keyboard at a library or something just feels like mush now.

  • I first used a mechanical kb in the 80s. I didnt know better. Now i think it is too noisy and everyone can hear me bashing one out

What's with these series of questions? https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/282863

What's next? First time you used a high end GPU?

  • The VIC-20 I had in the 80's had a mechanical keyboard, and so did my parents' type writers. They were okay I guess, a bit noisy.

  • Not all that fussed to be honest, currently use a Steelseries Apex (membrane) and am perfectly happy with it for both gaming and work. The mechanical keyboards I've tried out felt nice enough but in my opinion they're not that much nicer that I'd shell out an additional $100 above and beyond what I paid for my current, if I were going to grab one though I'd probably have to go for brown or clear switches because clicky switches would drive my other half up the wall.
