Preferably acoustic but I wouldn't mind dabbling in electric if it was cheaper - I own a bad qual. acoustic already.
Epiphone DR-100 is really popular for beginners, and I found it on sale:

It's around your price range. It has the nylon strings which are easier on the fingers for learners. Make sure you buy a bag, even a basic one, as the finish can chip if not handled with care.
I got this one, alas I have not been very dedicated and it's kind of gathering dust.
Second hand. I have a electric guitar in immaculate condition that I bought years ago for about $1400, and I'd be lucky to get around $250 for it.
Thanks I just realised second hand is the way to go a moment ago.
I've found two around the same price if you could help recommend. They're both $140 and second-hand but as new, just not sure which is better quality as a model.

I bought my used Yamaha steel string 30 years ago and it is still going strong!
Electric or acoustic?
