Reliable VPN for Kodi Streaming

Recently purchased a RPi3 and started streaming Kodi via Exodus. Looking at getting a VPN just to be safe.

Thinking of getting PIA ($53/year AUD) or Ivacy Lifetime Subscription ($49AUD). Any recommendations.

  • "just to be safe".
    What's the risk?

  • you probably want to get a debrid or premiumize.me account.

  • LimeVPN US$17.94/year. Unless you use hulu or netflix.

  • Exodus should be fine without a vpn. (As it's not torrent)

I personally use PIA and it works pretty well.

    I use PIA. Works well.

I used a Kodi VPN app, but later decided to have a dedicated VPN router. I bought that cheap mini GL-inet router and set up DDwrt on it with OpenVPN. Since it is a miniature router it is always on and everything that needs VPN goes through it. However, it can handle only one full HD TV as the VPN is 7-8 mbps through it (limited by the CPU of the router).

  • Looking at purchasing a Kodi box thing.. I have no idea about it but wondering is there a list of apps/channels that I can view which is streamed?

    • Take a look at the add-on Exodus. It has heaps of streams for both tv shows and new movies.

      • looks legit good.. is there a way I can run it from a pc/mac?

Pretty sure you can install Kodi on PC - not 100% sure as I've only ever used it on my RPi3

Edit: Looks like you can - https://kodi.tv/download/

        • @Obey: bloody ripper… just connect the comp to the tv and robbbyrob's ya uncle

        • @robbbyrob:
Better experience if you buy a RPi3/ Xiaomi Mi Box, no need for the comp. Best investment ever!

Couple other addons that are okay:
          Phoenix - similar to exodus
Gobble - Live TV / Sports

        • @Obey:

Keep the addons coming.. this is the best thing ever

          @robbbyrob:
Those are the main ones I use. I've heard SALTS is similar to Phoenix as well if you're interested.

I have a couple which don't really work - ccloudtv, UKTV Again and Castaway but heard good reviews on. It may be cause of location issues.

          @Obey:

There is a lot of good addons I mainly use exodus or sometimes phoenix or Bob
I installed the complete animal kodi pack preinstalled with a lot of the updated packs
Together with my MINIX x8 plus there use to be a nice add-on by rockcrusher but he retired best add-on these days has to be exodus :)

        • @Obey: THANKS

        • @stussy: THANKS

  • You could purchase a cheap Linux/Debian server, and install a PPTP client on the server.

Depends how much bandwidth or how many locations you want. But if you're just looking for one location I'd highly suggest doing this.

You can purchase a cheap server for around $5 a month. Plus it's very, very easy to set up server-side wise.

    • Interested in this, can you walk me through the steps to get this set up?

      • I've been using DigitalOcean for years, their support is top-notch and just in general really good!

If you are after just the one location, I'd recommend just purchasing the basic package which costs $5.00 monthly.

        You will get the following:

512MB Memory - (You will not use even half of this provided memory, as we are only setting up a PPTPD VPN Client).
1 Core Processor - (Again, more than enough).
20GB SSD Disk - (We will be only setting up/Installing tthe VPN client, which is more than enough once again).
1TB Transfer - (If you are a heavy bandwidth user like myself, this is plenty and will last you a month, easily).

First thing you'll have to do is, download PuTTY which can be aquired here.

        Go ahead and go here.

Sign up with the necessary information that they require.

You can also get $15.00 credit towards your droplets/servers, so If you do select the $5.00 a month package, you are getting 3 months FREE.

Now, go here and go down to the 'Promo Code' section, and enter the following valid Promo Code - LOWENDBOX

Select the package that you wish, as I stated before, the $5.00 monthly is enough; But again, you can always step it up a notch and go for the other packages if you wish.

It should state what OS you wish to install to that server, I'd recommend selecting 'Debian 8.6 x64'.

Make sure you select the Location as Singapore, you'll get the best download/upload speeds.

Let it do it's thing, once you are done you should have an Email with the Server Information including:

IP Information - (Connect to using PuTTY).
Username/Password - (Again, the credentials for the sever we will be using - We will have to change them once we first connect to the server).

Once you have that information, go ahead a open PuTTY which we downloaded before.

Under the Host Name (Or IP address), enter the provided server IP which you should of received in the Email.

Connection type should be 'SSH' as per default.

Now go ahead and click Save and click Open.

It should now prompt you to enter the username for that Server. By default, it should be just 'root'. Enter root, and hit 'Enter' on your Keyboard.

Now it should prompt you to enter the password for that server, enter the correct one that was sent to your Email.

it will ask you to put in a new password, enter a password that you can remember.

Once that's done, you are pretty much half way done!

Go here and pretty much copy and paste each line into PuTTY. (Make sure you read through it though!).

Then once you have done it all, just simply connect through what ever you chose for the Username and Password (Chapsecrets in the Tutorial).

I apologize for the very lengthy post, but I thoroughly enjoyed putting it together. If you have any more questions, feel free to PM me.

        • Great thanks! Will let you know if I have any questions.

  • Does it even matter if we use vpn? the legislation as I understand it is just about movie studios $50 per site to block all the sites, with a million mirrors being put up daily, this will cost them too much money, they don't seem to be pushing the you get 3 strikes rule anymore and if you go with non large telcos, they probably don't care.
