is that not a better deal ?

    • That is if you don't need to share your connection with anyone.
This modem allows you to share your net connection over wi-fi the other one doesn't.

    • too slow!

This can broadcast the 3G web access to local devices (including microSIM ipad, iphone4) via wireless — so it's far more versatile.

      • Including IPads i believe…

  • Do these things also double as a wifi router ???

    • it is a wifi router.

  • I dont get it, and the home page tells me nothing.
Is it just a 3g hotspot?

    Like this ?

    • Yes.

    • yes

    • Yes it is that but with a MODEM!

If you bought that you would still have to buy: http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/28094
Plus hope that your lucky withe the DX device supports the USB modem.

Yes, it is essentially the same idea as far as I can tell. But you can use a good smartphone to do just the same trick, i.e share your mobile broadband over WiFi.

      • This is what your referring to:
        http://www.joikushop.com/
For Nokia S60, Mameo and Windows Mobile

Otherwise I think Android has this feature built in.

no luck for iPhones i think.

        • Yep my N1 can do this :D <3 gooogle

        • Jailbroken iPhone can install a app called MyWi to share internet

Alternatives within Australia are more expensive:

    • Netcomm for $300 unlocked from Apple. It has more device capacity, and I understand that it can service Next-G as well. Gizmodo / Whirlpool

    • MiFi from Internode for $350, or $250 with a contract. Gizmodo / Whirlpool

  • Link says $149, is the sale over already ???

    • "on sale @ DSE physical store for $99"

I have got one of these. I paid double ($199) about a year ago now, and yes you need to top up $80 to unlock the modem. I basically just bought the 10GB prepaid for $149 to have it unlocked, but still haven't finished the 10GB lols. I use it on the road with my itouch + laptop or netbook, and when my bro is with me on the bus he gets to use it too =)

Another point to keep in mind is about charging the modem. I bought a Motorola charger from DSE ($30) which solved the problem of charging the modem at the same time as using it. Unless the stock being sold now has this issue resolved, or includes a wall charger, otherwise you are stuck with charging it via USB while the device is off, because even though it may look like it is charging while switched on, it really isn't lols.

I bought this before the Netcomm/Mifi were around, and would likely have got that instead, but now with this price reduction… half the price I paid! Like I was already :S when it came down to $149, but now /sigh.

  • I've used one of these for the last 6 months and it's a great little device

  • What is battery time usage like for the modem on one charge before it dies on you?

    • +1

      It's about 4 hours

    • 4-5 hrs

    • I found it to last about 3.5-4 hours

    • Roughly 4 hours

  • My brothers asus netbook uses linux thing.
Ive been hesitant about recommending the usbkey modems to him.
I dont want to support it interstate.

    This might solve his issues.

  • yeah the only thing that bothers me is to top up $80 to unlock the modem

  • is this network locked or software locked?

  • I stopped into a few DSEs around Perth (city, Karrinyup), and they all had this for $149 still - one of the guys said the sale finished a couple of days ago. Hopefully others will be more lucky :)

    • I asked the guy @ DSE last night
he told me the same thing but I really need one for my trip
      so I got it anyway.
When he rang it up, it appeared to be still $99.
Not sure if the sale has finished or not but worth asking them to scan it for you

  • bought it last weekend at DSE $99. Activated to get 5gb. Unlocked on Ebay $15. Running on 3 & Virgin/Optus - ALL GOOD!

    • would you mind telling me which ebay seller did you get your unlock from?

  • I got this from virgin stall in the shopping centre about 2 months ago for $100. they even gave me postpaid but no contract, month to month.ie can terminate anytime without penalty. i use it a lot for my ipod touch and in the office where some sites are blocked using proxy. If you plug this to pc and turn the wifi and modem on to connect to the internet, it wont charge. so if you leave ur pc on all the time and leave it connected, u wont ever need to charge it. unless you go mobile

  • you bought an IPad,hahahahha!

    • I feel sorry that you cant make use of one ;p, its fkin awesome for some things.

  • I use my e72 as the 3g wifi hotspot with joikuspot as mentioned by this thread.

6hrs battery, which i thought was crap until i read here that this dedicated device is 4hrs.

I think this device is rather niche. You only want it if your phone cant work as hotspot, and you dont plan on getting a new phone, and dont mind carrying yet another device, and dont mind paying for mobile internet separately when phone data plans are getting so cheap thesedays.

  • I went to my local DSE and they said it is $149 and the salesman checked the computer and said it had never been on special for $99 and couldn't sell it for that price.

  • I found out what the real deal is. You'll have to buy the iPad to enjoy the $99 price. It is the same discount across all DSE stores.

Now if you are still wanting it for $99. Do this:

    1. Print out this coupon below:
      http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/28390

    2. The HN store sells this on special at $149 right now. Take $50 off and expect to pay only $99 only. You can use credit card to gain some loyalty points also.

I just did that today and is in my position for $99.
