Then u would be at home with this deal , eb usually gets trade in and change a case at most and pass it on as refurbished

Is $218 for a second hand 4 plus years old phone a bargain?

    • Well if u are masochistic, then it is a gold pot

Not sure on the quality of a phone from JB, however an iPhone 5 is a perfectly good, functional, quick and smooth device.

And you don't have the ongoing hassle of dealing with Android crashes, slow downs and having to wipe and reinstall the operating system every year.

Consider this - the fact that they are worth more than $200 after 4 years, and the fact that there are still so many of them in use just goes to show how good they are.

      • I don't see that many people still using this model. It was the biggest selling phone in the world when it was released, so I'd expect there are some still using the phone though.

The problem I'd have with a deal like this is that you don't know what the quality you are ending up with. A 4 year old phone for instance which could have over a 1000+ cycles on the battery, and at this age won't be very good. Also newer versions of iOS tend to slow these older devices down considerably. I remember the updates pretty much turning my old iPod touch into a paperweight. Even after doing a factory reset it didn't rectify the issue. I would recommend everyone do a hard reset after any major update, irrespective if it's Android or iOS device. Bugs and issues can develop on any os over time and after a major update.

If it was refurbished by someone that does a good job at refurbing phones like Apple, then yeah with new battery and screen etc it'll be a pretty reasonable deal. This isn't too different to find it second hand on a facebook for sale group.

I agree that the quality of this "refurb" is going to be very suss. It's unlikely that even the basics will have been checked.

My guess is that these are just trade-in phones that have been sent to Asia for a quick check and refurb. These places grade them into A, B, C etc and then resell back in AU, UK, USA, etc. Gawd knows if the phone is even an AU model, let alone what grade it is.

The iPhones have a considerably more powerful CPU than the iPod Touch. Also, the iOS updates are better now days and don't swamp the older machines… they simply omit certain features so that the device doesn't die of slowness.

We have 2 x iPhone 5's in our family. They have just upgraded to IOS 10.2 and they run perfectly fine. Dead smooth, no slowdown at all.

I totally agree - I reckon that there are better ways to get an iPhone 5 than this.

        • @llama: so where's a good place to get a cheap iPhone 5?

i had a look at their "refurbished" ipod touches a few years ago. scratches all over the screen, looked filthy. i don't trust EB with their refurbed stuff

Buy any of the cheap mid range Android phones that have been listed on this site recently and they will better these phones in every single way.

Oh great. Now you have upset the Apple fanbois. Look at all them downvotes… But you do have a point. There are a lot of really good phones listed here every day that have way better specs, are newer technology and cost about the same as what they are asking for the 16gb iPhone 5.

I have bought "refurbished" phones from EB before and they are far from "refurbished" At best they are wiped over with an isopropyl bacteria wipes cloth and checked if they power on. All of them in the store were covered in marks/dents and had to sort through the ones with the least amount of damage on them.

inb4: rah rah, band 28, must be 256gb, octacore, 64bit, iOS 10, Android hate. (opps, that last one is too late.)

    • Like a new Redmi Pro 64GB for less than the price of a used 8GB 5C toy. No prizes for guessing what the 'C' stands for!
