Windows Server 2008 R2 VPS - 1GB RAM - US $29/Month

51

I have been considering getting a Windows VPS for a while, and SoftSys always have cheap prices, but this deal is $10 cheaper than their cheapest hosting! The only thing you lose out on is the "SmarterBundle Pro (Worth $800)" which I would not use anyway. Also there is a $20 setup fee with this cheap deal (normally setup is free).

This is a Hyper-V virtual server which means you get 1GB of dedicated RAM, and 1 vCPU core. So its basically a full Windows server at an extremely low price. Only down side is its not hosted in Australia and also I cannot vouch for the quality of the service although I did use their regular shared hosting once and it was fine.

I think the deal is related to the launch of the new Microsoft hosters database (http://www.microsoft.com/web/hosting)

  • vCPU != CPU. Remember, Virtual Private Server is as the name suggests, a virtual server. Elements may be said to be dedicated, may infact be managed to appear isolated and available just for you. Careful with longterm subscriptions.

    • True. All virtual machines have a dedicated virtual CPU core by definition. I would like someone who has an account to upload and run a process that uses 100% of the CPU, and then see if there's a gradual fall in performance as the VM is throttled or affected by other users. US$29/month is still very good for what's on offer, assuming it's not oversubscribed.

    • Yup, corrected.

The 1GB ram is not shared though, to my knowledge current version of Hyper-V only supports allocating dedicated RAM.

From what I have read on WHT (http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?t=958301&highli…) they claim no more than 15 VPS per server. Which would equate to roughly 1Ghz of real CPU (if it was shared equally). Hopefully the 15 VPS applies to the $29 deal too.

15 x $29 = $435 which would be the cost of the host server (or less) -> running business with no profit :D

$29/month is probably worthwhile for the host. Let's say it's $29 per month with 15 users. US$435/month. How long does the server last? I would give it 2 years. You've now got US$10,440 for the life of the server. No monitor or associated peripherals required, so let's say $1k for the software (host buys in bulk), $2k for the hardware, leaving $7k for power, support, bandwidth, locating and profit. Not bad.

And if the host sneaks a few more virtual machines onto less loaded servers then it's pure gravy on top.

I have a VPS server with these guys.
I really cannot fault them, the service is great and the support is fantastic!

Just note that if you want backup, that's an extra $10p/m for 10GB and uses R1Soft CDP (backs up the whole server, not just selected files).

    Well I signed myself up.

I have had a 15 minute play with it. The disk IO performance is about 10x what I had on my previous VPS which was Virtuozzo based. Getting well over 50MB/s. Everything is very snappy so I am impressed.

There is only one major problem I have found so far (which is typical of these smaller hosting resellers)…the passwords are emailed to you in plain text and also displayed in plain text in the various web control panels. This is really bad and typical of PHP developers who build these reseller billing systems. Its a nasty lapse of security but people think it makes life easier. If it wasn't for that my short term impressions would be 5/5.

  • Only 300GB of BW, Couldnt find a mention of what happens when you go over either.

  • Vow, this deal sounds fantastic. Going to try this deal (http://www.softsyshosting.com/Windows-VPS-Hyper-V-MS.aspx) out today and report back on how it works.

SPAM! Don't you love it when owners pretend to be clients. Be careful with the location (india?) and the bandwidth overage charges (very expensive in India!)

    • Who is the owner pretending to be a client? I am assuming you mean me considering you down-voted my deal? Well I have no relationship with SoftSys apart from just signing up.

Softsys claim their data center is located in Denver (http://softsyshosting.com/Datacenter.aspx) at this location http://www.handynetworks.com/ and this correlates with my tracert:

I think the guy who owns the company is indian and may or may not be living in india (according to his twitter) but the infrastructure is definitely in the USA.

I did ask how they did it so cheap and he claimed that its all colocated and its their own hardware.
