Importing from USA

Hi
Long time reader first time poster,
Just after a little insight on importing.
I want to import a kids product by sea to sell here in aus.
More as a pocket money bussiness that isnt gonna pay a house off or anything.
I understand import duties and taxes add up to about 15% if total value is over $1000 aud.
my question is, what methods are used to get around this tax and is legal.
I was thinking of sending under $1000 worth (3 items) to me, my wife and mother in law.so we recieve 3 products each (9 in total $2700 value) Is this within the law?
Another option if this gets around it is send under $1000 at a time to me but have them sent after one another. Is this legal?

Thank you fot your help ozbargainers

  • Free trade agreement with USA, so it's just 10% GST.

    • What she meant was 10% for gst and 5% for import processing fee for above $1000 capped at $50.

You can import in many many small quantity to avoid import tax - totally legal, however as you runs a business you need to register ABN (free) and report sales and allowable deduction/expenses under business in personal income tax and do stocktake at end of year. If your sales is more than $75000 a year you need to register GST.

    • Perfect thank you for your reply.
I will be registered ans will sell and pay tax here, just not the extra expence to get it here.

      Thank you

you would have to include GST in all sales anyways.

Not necessarily for those with less than $75000 sales pa: https://www.ato.gov.au/Business/GST/Registering-for-GST/

Including GST in tax invoice is different from registering for GST.
All business are required include GST in tax invoice regards less of sales volume.
However some items like fresh food, Gift cards does not have GST.

        • A person who just start buying items and selling them online is a business. He or she however didn't have to register for GST thus not including GST in his/her sales. He/She can issue a invoice, but not a tax invoice.

          WRONG!

Don’t collect GST on your sales or claim GST credits on your purchases. Your business issues normal invoices – it must not issue tax invoices. Normal invoices don’t include the words ‘tax invoice’ or indicate that the invoiced amount includes GST.

If you are not registered for GST

  • Very good
