Is This Possible with a Dual Sim Phone?

Hey Guys

I am so glad I found this site. What a great resource.

I was wondering if the following is possible.

Basically I use a lot of data on my phone and have basically no phone requirements past needing to receive calls.

My phone is a one plus 3 so it has dual sim slots.

Am I able to get a sim card which is data only like the
OVO Prepaid 13GB a month for 29.95 https://www.ovo.com.au/ovo-data

And then for the second slot put in a long expiry sim card that will only receive calls like the

The 5 dollar aldi 365 sim card
https://www.aldimobile.com.au/plans/payg/

I am currently paying 70 a month for a 16GB plan with Spintel so if I can get my data some a data sim and just have a back up sim to recieve calls that would save heaps of money.

Has anyone done anything like this?

Cheers

  • Mines the S7 edge duos so it might change with phone, but I can choose which sim does voice, which does text and which does mobile. So I'd say yes, just choose your internet sim for mobile data, and the other sim for text and voice.

  • Yes, provided your phone does 3G at least on both slots, because 2G is being phased out.

  • As long as the 2nd sim works on 3G/4G and not 2G it should work as the 2G network is being shutdown (Telstra 2G already shut down), which renders the 2nd sim slot in most dual sim phones useless (only good for storing an extra sim card).

You also need to make sure the data only sim will work in a phone. I have an iPad with Telstra and putting the sim into a phone doesn't work and results in message to put the sim into a data only device (ie. mobile broadband modem).

  • You can do this as long as the phone supports active dual sim (both sims are active) which you can decide which works with what. Some dual sim phones are standby, this means that one sim is active and the other is in standby (you have to manual switch between them). Most dual sim phones are active now I think but do a quick check and it should be fine.

  • Not sure of the details but from reading OzBargain i am under the impression that a data only sim can have a phone number ported to it . This will only allow you to receive calls and would even eliminate the need for dual sim.

  • Thanks everyone. Ordered now
