NetGear Nighthawk or Orbi?

Currently have Telstra cable at home.

The router is in our second living room so my brother can access wifi from the granny flat but it kinda sucks for me and my PS4 as the Telstra Netgear cable modem is rubbish. I was going to buy a nighthawk router, r8000 maybe and now see Netgear have a new rage of routers called Orbi.

Not many reviews out in terms of comparing the Nighthawk to the Orbi.

Does anybody have any experience with both? And which would you recommend?

Thanks

    • wouldn't steer clear of the router because of this reason. Everything is vulnerable it's just the netgear is more publicly vulnerable at the moment. It will be patched eventually so if you're seriously thinking about it then wait for them eBay deals to come along.

      • Netgear's attitude to the problem is the main issue here.

    • Orbi it is! Lol

  • 1) Everything is vulnerable = Crap

    2) it's just the netgear is more publicly vulnerable at the moment. No it's just that Netgear didn't issue a fix after four months of being notified leaving the researcher no choice but to publically disclose the flaw or leave it to the bad guys.

    3) It will be patched eventually so what? they've already shown they don't give a shit about security in the most definitive way possible: their actions. Only an idiot would advise don't worry about this, they may do something even though they couldn't be (profanity) up until now so just buy it.

    • Amen, brother from another mother. Netgear's attitude to the problem is very telling.

  • FYI that if you have an original PS4, it doesn't have 5GHz wifi.

    • Correct. I forgot to mention this is why I want to move the router so I can use Ethernet instead.

Orbi is effectively nighthawk + extender.
If you have a large house go for orbi as the extender will help. If not stick with nighthawk.

    • Property is quite big at 1200m squared. Just the answer I was looking for. Thank you.

  • Wow $750 for the Orbi!!! Wtf are they smoking at Netgear??

I've just replaced an R8000 (with an E6150 extender upstairs) with the Orbi - and so far, the Orbi is doing better for me. Especially so when it comes from handing over to the connection to the better wifi when I am upstairs, whereas with the E6150 extender, I had to manually swap it over because the R8000 would hold on for dear life to the connection.
What you do miss is the range of router functionality which isn't (yet) available on the Orbi - it's designed more of a plug and play for mass market rather than Nighthawk which caters to a completely different demographic. Maybe there will be a version of DD-WRT or similar - but I believe there is a patent over the technology, so open source firmware may not be possible.
Agree that the price is a bit steep - but I saw some D-Link Taipan routers in Officeworks today with pricetags north of $700, so it's obviously where things are heading. Wonder how the price will compare to the new X10 Nighthawk…
