2008 Accord 2.4i Won't Rev Above 3000 RPM

Hello Ozfamily,

Got a 2009 4 cylinder Honda Accord sedan. Has 180hp(approx) @ 6000rpm claimed by Honda though the car don't rev any above 3.5k it just switches to higher gear. Therefore, the ride is slow and very hard to take over on freeways etc and on lights pretty slow pickup which makes the overall experience unpleasant.

Please suggest any fix.

Thank you.

  • have you tried 'overdrive' ???

Try turning it off and then on

  • did you buy this brand new? I'm assuming it's tiptronic yeah? If so, you should be able to reset the TCU and teach the system by manually shifting. At least, that is doable in Accord Euros.

    • Its an Automatic but is this an expensive to reset Ecu?

      • An easy method of resetting the ECU it to completely remove leads to battery terminals, press/ engage brake pedals to discharge power out of circuit. Leave it for 5 or so minutes then reconnect battery. Start car up and allow ECU to control/manage cars idle. Then gradually throttle accelerator in Neutral ofcourse working up to red-line.

If you have power windows, this method may affect them so you may need to reset them aswell. Easy to do. One by one just hold down window controller and hold for 5 secs then repeat in upward direction.

  • i know nothing about accords. however my mercedes vito van has a rev limiter that can kick in sometimes if there is an error (or perceived error) from the onboard computer e.g. fluid levels. my van had an issue wit <i forget what> and wouldn't rev past 2000RPM. it was in what is called "Limp Mode"

    • Thats informative. So you changed some fluids or parts?

I take it basic service every 10000km and use shell full synthetic only.

      How about transmission oil?

      • yes, my mechanic bellieved it had an issue with an engine sensor. he replaced that and then something else and something else and somehow that fixed the issue - sorry, can't be more specific , have totally forgotten what it was.

check your fluids are topped up.

        is your accord a VTEC?

Put your foot to the floor? Do you actually do that?

Have you tried driving it in specific gear or does it have a manual option that you can use?

    • Yea i do. Even use paddle shifters top manually select gears but it doesn't go higher than 3500-3800rpm.

  • Crank Position sensor?

Thanks I'll ask my mechanic abiut it.

    • CPS will immobilise the car - if ECU cant determine position of crankshaft it shuts down. In most modern cars it'll also throw a check engine light/code.

  • I'm willing to bet its the oil. Check your levels, if its low the car goes into safe mode.

    • I had the service done with 5-30 shell full synthetic 2 months ago I'll recheck oil levels again but it is always this slow its not a new problem.

  • I remember a similar problem on a Honda S2000 on the show wheeler dealers. Something to do with how the engine works with cams for higher revs. ( like different cam position for higher revs )See if YouTube has the episode.

    • S2000 is an awesome car and yes those old school hondas had pure VTEC however Honda is now making I-vtec which are technically advanced but no fun.

If i ground the paddle on kine than max rpm it goes up to is 4000 on neutral.

  • Why not take it to say, a mechanic?????

    • It would be good for me if i know a few things before hands.

  • last time it gone for a service>?

    • Regular maintenance and services are done at 10k intervals (never missed). Using 5-30 full synthetic shell oil since last 60k

      Car has done 159000k.m

This seems highly ECU/trans related. If you can't rev above a specific RPM - and it's the same RPM in every gear - could it be some kind of limp mode?

I'm not a mechanic but I do know most of the things commenters have listed here - things like ignition coils, crank sensors etc - are not be a solution to your problem.

Find a reasonably reputable local mechanic and it shouldn't be too much hassle - often works out cheaper in the long run than trying to do DIY diagnosis. Please just take your car to a mechanic :)
