I think for under $500 your iphone would do a better job.
Don't have an Iphone
Reply to that post and not mine? Go search the interwebs you lazy douche.
NOU!
I'm not all up to date with the new models, but for 500 you should be able to find a decent entry-level system camera that supports interchangeable lenses, or even a rather high-end camera if you are willing to consider a used one. The Lumix GH3 was considered to be about the best you could get for video recording a while back, and now they sell used for about what you are willing to pay.
There's is so many brands and models to consider that I won't even bother trying list them all, but the GH3 really comes to mind when you mention video recording. Now, you haven't said what type of camera you are looking for, is it a compact one you need? Fixed or interchangeable lenses?
I'm really bad at this, I'm looking for a interchangeable camera :D
And what about the size? The size and weight differences between types of interchangeable cameras can be quite large.
And another question, do you have any interest in using older manual focus lenses? Then a camera with a crop factor of 1.5 would be preferable over things like M43. Legacy lenses are quite popular for mirrorless cameras (I have a tonne of them for mine) and also both cheap (in most cases) and great for many types of video. Is this any good? I can get it for $320

DSLRs - Canon 700D or Nikon equiv?
I would increase the budget if you can. The absolute pick of the bunch here would be the E-M10 mkII which is $764 at JB, but you also get $150 cashback so $614. It is a great camera, takes excellent pics and plenty of lens options available in the future for you, and they start at very reasonable prices.
That's a little over my budget but they seem to be great cameras, Is this one the same as the one you mentioned? http://www.harveynorman.com.au/cameras-printers-photocentre/…
That is the first version (Mark 1). It is an option if you want to save some money. Although I don't think they qualify for the $150 cash back.
This is what I would reccomend: https://www.jbhifi.com.au/cameras/dslr/olympus/olympus-om-d-…
Unfortunately they put the price up. It was $764 for a few days during their camera sale. You might ask them if they can still do the price or close to it (it is often on sale for $799-$829). It is worth spending a decent amount of money on a camera because it is an investment and you should get at least 2-3 years out of it. The Olympus is a M43 system which offers some savings in the long term because lenses are cheaper as well, so that's another thing to consider.
The only thing is that money is tight and it's a Christmas present so my parents don't want to spend too much, I'll see what they can do. Thanks so much for the recommendation
The main problem you will have with a camera for doing video is the sound quality which can vary from OK to downright atrocious when it comes to handheld cameras.
I would suggest angling for one that includes a microphone port so you can attach a directional microphone to it.
You need to specify what you will be using it for..
