Just interested to hear from anyone who has installed a hardware raid controller for their G8 or similar microserver in terms of tips and tricks, controller card selected and any pitfalls to avoid.
Recently got 4 * 4TB WD Reds on sale and finally ready to finalise the setup of my G8. Not sure whether to just go with software raid or go full hog and get a hardware raid controller.
Anyone installed a hardware RAID controller in their HP Microserver?

Agree, UNRAID and you can take the drives out if TSHTF.
Love UnRaid
I chucked an older p410 in mine, and grabbed a 1gb flash backed cache from ebay for like $50 (all the battery backed caches will all be expired by now). Runs raid 5, and was relatively inexpensive. Definitely check the us for Hp spare part sellers. Also would recommend getting a 4 pin to data power adaptor to run an SSD from the DVD data port!
Software RAID - if you are using RAID only for redundancy and only for data storage.
Hardware RAID - if you need fast write / read speeds, OS or Application performance etc.
My vote would be for software raid as it's a lot more flexible, but your use case may dictate which option you go for. See here for my setup, I use a M1015 equivalent flashed to IT mode, bought this one off ebay for $115. Good luck!
