    Payment in USD not AUD.

    Is this website trustworthy?

    • I received my email with redemption details right after payment and have been able to use the credit fine. Having said that, there seem to be a few reports on facebook of orders (not relating to the AirBnB voucher, as far as I can see) being cancelled without explanation.

Have you booked with airbnb with the credit? no paypal checkout either, only credit card

      • Does the USD amount transfer over to AUD?

There are some concerning reviews of GiftCardMall on Yelp. I was hoping to buy a voucher for my next unplanned holidays but I think I will give it a miss.

    Thanks OP.

Yeah it's a little scary for the amount of money we're talking about.

  • Hmmmm about to go to Singapore and looking into Airbnb as hotels are ridiculously priced. Anyone with a referral link?

    • -4

      I can PM you? :)

    • +4

Use the random referral link in the OP. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/goto/d17540?r=r

      So everyone gets a chance.

      • How do you add to the list?

        EDIT: NVM…just figured it out.

FYI - Airbnb is illegal in Singapore.
I am in the same boat and will probably risk it - but short-term rentals (under 6 months I believe) are illegal in Singapore unless you are a registered hotel/boarding house.

      • Yes, it is illegal. Though that doesn't stop Temasek Holding from participating in a huge investment on Airbnb (http://www.dealstreetasia.com/stories/temasek-participates-i…). Does that mean they are investing an illegal business on home ground? Interesting thought…

Airbnb are starting to 'make deals' with lawmakers in order to comply with laws/legislation in some areas. Most recently in London, New York City, and Amsterdam. They are apparently in discussions with San Francisco.

They were fined 600,000 euro last month in Barcelona, and are contesting the penalty. They may try to 'make a deal' there as well.

If they can get 'legal' in more places/locations, reduce their losses (last published in 2015 at about $500,000 per day), they will probably issue an IPO (go public and issue shares).

I note that all business Airbnb does in/from Australia is handled by Airbnb Ireland, who do not pay any taxes in Australia.

        Airbnb is illegal in Singapore

Airbnb type STRs (Short Term Rentals) are 'illegal' in most places (Countries/cities) where Airbnb operates.

In Australia apparently only 12 local councils permit Airbnb type rentals.

In Japan they are currently only permitted in certain SEZs (Special Economic Zones) in Tokyo (in Shinzuku-ku) and in Osaka City.

Whole place STRs under 30 days are not permitted in New York City.

Whole place STRs are not permitted in Berlin.

Amsterdam, Paris, London, Barcelona, Hong Kong, have severe restrictions, and so on.

Many apartment complexes and 'condominiums' worldwide, have banned STRs under their 'by-laws'.

Just how well and how strictly these laws, legislation, and 'bans', are enforced is another matter.

Private residential properties or the rooms within their premises should not be rented out on a short-term basis for less than six months on a daily/weekly/monthly basis.

It worded poorly. Says "SHOULD NOT". So its open to interpretations. If they worded it "MUST NOT" then its becomes illegal.

        Lol. I'm being optimistic.

    From https://www.airbnb.com.au/terms/gift_cards

    Limitations.
Gift Cards cannot be used to purchase other gift cards or applied to a reservation of 28 nights or more. Gift Cards cannot be reloaded, resold, transferred for value or redeemed for cash, except to the extent required by law. Unused Gift Card balances in an Airbnb.com account may not be transferred to another Airbnb.com account. Gift Cards can only be purchased by or gifted to individuals in the United States.

From posts on Airbnb's Twitter and Facebook pages, I understand that "Gift Cards can only be purchased by or gifted to individuals in the United States" means that Gift Cards can only be used by members who reside in the USA.

I think the T&Cs above are pretty self-explanatory. No hard feelings OP, but going to neg to alert other who might buy and then have issues trying to redeem, or even when receiving the gift card.

      • +3

good point. I saw the one neg and just scroll right down to find this useful piece of info. well done A3Australia and keithality

      Thanks almost bought $1000 credit.

  • Beyond the poor reputation of the website and the airbnb terms and conditions restricting gift-card use to US recipients, I've read on several forums (though dated) that you can't stack gift cards?? Also, people are already having issues buying this promotion (http://onemileatatime.boardingarea.com/2016/12/11/20-off-air…).

You would think a deal like this would be brodened anyway since the gift cards have no expiry date so could be resold?

I really want to use this but I'm pussying out…

  • Wouldn't that be if you PLAN an upcoming stay? All upcoming stays are already paid for aren't they? (payment upon booking)

  • +4

Anyone given it a go and tried applying the voucher. Just don't want to be left $1000 out of pocket if this didn't work

    • +1

      Interested to know too.

  • +1

Any direct link where to redeem gift card on Airbnb profile? Couldn't find it…

Edit: seems to be Account Settings -> Payment Method. Anyone can confirm?

Edit2: Seems to be USA residents only

  • By the way, expiry of this deal seems to be on the 17th Dec.

  • Sorry OP, as much as I'd love 20% off on airbnb as I have a trip next year, it just seems too risky right now.

  • Just spend thousands on Airbnb's for Europe. This would have been really handy if it is legit. :(

  • +2

OP have you successfully redeemed your gift card? Please let us know the process.

  • just tried and would not accept my card…

    • +1

just received a call from the banks fraud department

  • Same here, just tried to put through a $5 gift card. Pre Authorization shows up on my end but website says declined. :(

    • when i spoke to the woman from the fraud department she said in most cases they cancel the pre authorization after a few days

  • Happy I didn't pull the trigger.

My airbnb instant booking was cancelled. Airbnb hosts can really suck.
