Denon Receivers - Setup Tips, Questions and Answers

Hi All
There seems to be a lot of people who have bought the Denon amp lately. Thought it may be worth sharing some tips and maybe get some questions answered

  • DTS:X is released, just need to hook up an Ethernet cable to the amp to download it(Takes about an hour to download and install)

  • It is recommends to use the sub's direct input (aka, LFE input)

  • Volume levels are calculated only from the first mic position, so it's important that you start in the exact center of the listening area, at the same distance from the left and right front speakers.

  • Personally, I have turned off the MultEQ and Dynamic EQ, as its 'slight roll off at high frequencies, which is optimized for movies'. I like hearing the high frequencies but that's a personal preference

  • You can only get HD audio(Atmos,DTSX,DTSHD/MA) through the HDMI port, digital coaxial and S/PDIF will not send HD audio, has no copy protection

Problems I am having

Cannot get Pandora to show in amp, I can airplay ok, but it will not 'Connect to' or show within the "Online Music" section within the amp

Side Note
If you have a Nvidia Shield TV, kodi will not play dts-hd, dts-hdma, dtsx or atmos. I downloaded SPMC Media Player by kaying. With a few settings modified, it can play everything

SPMC Settings
Enable 'expert' in the settings menu. Then, make the following changes:
Audio output device = Android, RAW Passthrough
Number of channels = 7.1 [your receiver should be able to handle this input regardless of your actual speaker configuration]
Output configuration = Best Match
Stereo upmix = off
Maintain original volume on downmix = on
Boost centre channel when downmixing = 0 dB
Resample quality = High
Keep audio devices alive = 10 Minutes [this will prevent your AVR from going to sleep]
Enable audio DSP processing = off
Enable passthrough = on
Passthrough output device = Android, RAW Passthrough
Check your AVR receiver's user manual to confirm that it supports each of the following audio codecs and enable them accordingly:
Dolby Digital (AC3) capable receiver = on
Dolby Digital Plus (E-AC) capable receiver = on
DTS capable receiver = on
TrueHD capable receiver = on
DTS-HD capable receiver = on
Note that these instructions were written for Android 6.0/Shield TV 3.2.

  • If your trying to use ARC (Audio Return Channel), after you turned on ARC on both the tv and the amp and have the HDMI cable connected to the ARC HDMI of the TV(there is only one HDMI that is arc, normally), you may have to go in to the settings of your TV and turn off the internal tv speakers. Which will send any TV/HDMI channel to the amp.
Without turning the internal speakers of the TV to off, I could not get any sound from the ARC cable

"Some Samsung TVs support ARC (Audio Return Channel) function via HDMI cable. ARC enables the output of digital sound using just an HDMI cable. However, ARC is only available through an HDMI (ARC) port and only when the TV is connected to an ARC-enabled AV receiver. Connect an HDMI cable to the TV's HDMI (ARC) port and the device's HDMI output connector"
