I got mine recently from Gearbest works great, video quality is excellent! I was one of the lucky ones that that got it for $11 as part of the 11.11 sale.

    • glad to hear… I'm excitedly awaiting for mine to come…

      • +5

I also purchased the GPS antenna for $7 which I can also vouch for if your interested. http://www.gearbest.com/car-gps-tracker/pp_331996.html

        • +1

I was quietly hating on you for getting it at $11 but now think that you are a top bloke/chick.. thanks for the GPS tracker link…

Are you running it out of the cigarette lighter socket or did you hardwire it?

        • @robbbyrob: cig lighter double socket, moved my old Navman 358 to the rear window so now have front and rear cameras. The A118C is way better than the Navman, much clearer!

        • Thanks for the GPS link. Also bought this unit in that us$11.11 sale. Just realised I was sent a GPS module (free) by mistake in another deal that looks the same - so will find & try that.

Think long and hard if you want your speed encoded into the video of any incident recorded that you use to make an insurance claim.

        • @iratepirate:

I don't believe the speed is encoded into the actual video with this model, it's part of the metadata, which can be stripped if necessary…

  • I went with a xiaomi dash cam. For $67 shipped. Hope i made a good choice

Keep in mind - "The Yi is not recommended for hot environments as it uses lithium ion batteries."

      • +24

According to the original poster, gearbest claim this one "will automatically work when the car ignite", so I trust it will work fine in a hot environment.

        • Wow, a flame-resistant and bomb-proof dashcam?! Rushing to buy one now :p

        • -4

Ignite can also means the car is on fire :)

        • +4

@sky blu: err, thanks for clearing that up.. 8-|

  • +3

bit disappointed with the quality of video. espexially at night. got my gps antenna from ebay for 10 bucks. I might buy a119c to replace it.

    • Wait for A119 version 2 to be released soon.
There is also the new A118C version 2 just being released too.

  • +4

Good to see it will start recording when your car goes up in flames.

  • +1

It will automatically work when the car ignite.

Won't it melt in the fire?

    • +7

Yes but those brief recorded moments before it does may be crucial in understanding how it all started.

  • +1

Though the day video linked in the description looks great, at night it isn't that good. Check here a comparison video between this cam & Street Guardian SG9665GC at dusk: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SjU-4pJhACg

    • I would have to agree.. from that particular video the night vision seems to suck.. although there is a lack of street lamps on that road so I guess it depends on where you're driving etc

      • I know what you mean about the street lights, but don't forget that the reviewer had both cams on their dash at the same time, and you can see that the A118C was too inferior to the Street Guardian. Of course the SG costs like triple the price of the Viofo, and also has a powerful Sony lens, but the difference in quality is like day and night. Having said that, I think the Viofo would be a great second cam (probably as a rear view cam) for day driving.

        • +2

More like 4x the price, so yeah, you'd hope it would be better than a ~$60 one!

    • Can't read the plates on either.

  • Does anyone know if GearBest and Banggood are the same mob?

    • could be right there they both have shit customer service and some deliveries don't arrive

  • Is a capacitor dash cam ok if you plan on connecting the camera directly up to the battery so it's on 24/7 or are you better off with a regular camera?

    • damn such a good Q… i need to know this too as I've purchased a hardwire to the battery

    • +3

The capacitor dash cam is better for dash cams that are permanently powered - capacitors don't fail nearly as frequently as the li-ion batteries in "regular" dash cams.

If you are going to leave it permanently powered, be aware that
      - it could shorten the life of your car battery, e.g. if it always discharges the battery down to half its capacity
      - leaving your car parked for a few days could flatten the car battery sufficiently that your car won't start.

It all depends on the capacity of your car battery, how much power the camera draws, and how long you leave it parked for. If the camera only discharges your car battery by 10% on the longest "normal" parking periods, it is unlikely you'll have any problems. Ideally the dashcam would automatically disconnect if the battery voltage got too low, and leave enough power to start the car. I don't know if any dashcams have this feature.

      • thank you for this post!

  • Still unsure if I should get this or the newer A119? :(

    • Or wait for the a119s that's being released soon? :P

      • The A119s is just a side-grade, I don't drive that much at night anyway

  • I want my 4K dash cam.

    • +1

I know but with this price I can get 2x118 for both front and rear

    • thanks for that, will wait for it instead of the A119

  • +1

Got one months ago and very happy with the video quality based on its price, very good value

  • Can confirm this is an excellent camera. Great picture quality, discreet. Highly recommended unless you want to spend big bucks

    • Daytime picture quality is good but night time is poor.

  • im surprised people dont seem to be going for the xiaomi? its basically there action cam with a built in screen etc? quality looks amazing a dash cam. is it because of the lithium batteries?

    • +1

Pretty much, the battery does not do well in hot weather

    • I got a Yi and one of these . Yi is better. I will have upgraded to 4K before battery dies.

  • How do you put one at the rear? Do you use a long cable from the front 12v socket? Where do you run the long cable through, the side or the middle?

    • Do some search on youtube

    • +2

Take apart your dash and roof lining and do it properly. I hate seeing exposed cables when it can only take 30 minutes to properly route and hide your power cables.
But to answer your question I use a fuse tap and a 12v to 5v regulator (I learnt the hard way by supplying 12v directly to the dash cam and fried it) and run it under the roof lining to the rear window.

    • It will automatically work when the car ignite.

Sounds like the least of your problems if car ignites…

  • How do you run the charging cable to this camera. Easy to diy?

  • I've had this camera mounted on two of my vehicles for more than 2 years now. Never missed a beat.

  • How long is the estimated delivery? Any idea?

I ordered a DashCan from these guys 19 November, they didn't ship it until 3 December.
I am still waiting for it.

Very poor, to take my money and not ship for 2 weeks.

      • Gearbest shipping starts at two weeks. I will never buy from them again. I waited for six weeks my first and last time.

  • When changing the Website currency to Australian dollar the price shows AUD$56.14 but when added to cart the price goes to AUD$74.71 even after removing the add-ons. Does anyone experience the same issue?

    • "Prices may fluctuate due to page caches…" maybe clear the cache memory? I just tried it on my google chrome browser and the cart is at $56.14

      • I think I figured why. First I placed order with USD currency and cancelled the payment at PayPal checkout. The order vanished, just to check it is still in the account order list awaiting for payment (but no longer in cart), I cancelled the order so that I place the order again but this time with Australian currency. That's why it is now showing $74.71 at checkout. It looks like the first order is at discounted price and the second order is at full price. Damn I missed it.

Edit: I did double check again with US Dollar this time and I can confirm the second order is at full price at USD$55.88 despite first order being cancelled.

  • It will automatically work when the car ignite.

    So it's fireproof?

  • -1

Does it record video inside the car?

    • I believe it records sound.. maybe if you flip the camera around it will record inside the car… maybe?

  • Price gone back up again to $74.71? it says flash sale over when you try to checkout :-(

    • +1

I found that if you have ONE in the cart it is at the flash sale price - $56.14aud but for 2 or more the price reverts to the original

      • That was my first unit order - what I found is that on the desktop it said that, then I tried on my mobile and that went through at the flashsale price :-)

  • Is the cable long enough to go along the side to the cigarette lighter socket?

    • +2

Yes, it is plenty long enough I haven't measured it but the cable was considerably longer than my old dashcam's cable and that was 3m, so it is probably 4m long.

  • Has the deal come back? It is showing as $56.14 with 174 stocks left.

    • yeh it looks like it.. 10hrs to go!

  • I installed the camera with EASE a few days ago and just had a look at some footage. Recordings at night of lowly lit streets are terrible but all in all i am very happy with my purchase @$70 and would be even more so at ~$50.

  • Got this cam and even though I have turned off screensaver, it seems to either go into screen saver mode (display off) or turn off randomly. I am yet to observe more but thats what happened today.
