  • better spec phone on a network that probably wont do it justice :(

Just so you know, a lot of the Optus stores in Victoria have this one as a working demo. Very impressive phone.

    • Fountain Gate told me they weren't authorized to have a working demo until the 7th of July.

gotta love the competition. now bring it on vodafone!

    • The $49 Desire was because of Vodafone. When Vodafone has more Nexus Ones available, I have no doubt that they will also be bringing it down to $49 a month in competition to the Desire and Galaxy.

    Great phone, impressive price.

  • Is youtube still unlimited if I tether the phone to a notebook?

    • Yes, I believe it is on the social caps.

    • Facebook is free on the social cap, however not sure about tethering though. I think Optus still charge for tethering.

      • +1

Tethering definitely not included in Social Plans, I work for Optus ;).

        • Root and tether. :D
But I have a TPG higher end plan, so don't think I'll use a 3G network to watch YouTube anyway.

        • oh.. so tethering is not even included in the 500mb data?

          • @[Deactivated]: Nope, stated in the contract under the data section. Gotta pay extra ;(.

If you've got access to an ABN you can go on a Business Complete plan however and get a wireless dongle for your computer with the plan. It's normally $10 a month but first 3 months are free and there's no obligation to continue after those 3 months. I've done it myself :). Easy way to score a free $149 wireless dongle.

            • @Lions44: Why not just root? 3 advantages. You get 2.2 earlier than Samsung promised. You lose TouchWiz and the iPhone look on Android. You get tethering (and other awesome apps).

          • +1

            @[Deactivated]: Yep no tether allowed
but theres ways to get around it, even for non-root users.

No camera flash, why oh why samsung?

    • +2

Samsung doesn't want you to take photos at night ;)

    Great price, great phone.

  • Wow, this is cheap… and the Milestone has mysteriously disappered - I wonder if it'll be back on a cheaper plan.

  • who needs an iPhone when you have the choice of HTC Desire and Samsung Galaxy S at this price

I was considering getting the Samsung Wave on $39 Crazy Johns caps but thats uses samsungs Bada OS (which in itself is impressive but lacks androids array of apps, which to me isn't a big deal to me) and at least has a LED flash/Video Light.

in saying that I might still get a blackberry haha. Still love my phone to have tactile buttons, maybe I just need the EPIC 4g version of the galaxy s to come here :P

I have this phone (imported it a few weeks ago from handtec) it's a great phone. The screen is amazing (ignore online comparisons, you can't judge this screen based on how pictures of it look like on another screen, it has such vibrant colours). The lack of LED flash is a shame but its not a huge deal, they have a night mode which is ok. 720p video is awesome.

Main downsides are there is a bit of lag in menus at random times, apparently due to the touchwiz interface (shame, the touchwiz actually adds some decent stuff), and that it looks like an iphone. I use LauncherPro to get rid of the iphone menu look, but the hardware still looks like an iphone.

  • I have seen a Pro version of this on the web which includes a physical keyboard.

  • Samsung claim that "at this stage" the Pro version (called the Epic on the US Sprint network) won't be coming to Oz - http://ausdroid.net/2010/07/03/samsung-have-no-plans-to-brin…

I've seen claims that the networks hadn't asked for it - I can't fathom this at all, I personally know quite a few people who are very keen to see this thing as it seems to tick pretty much every box on the list (see http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/28/samsungs-epic-4g-for-spri…). It even has an LED flash on the 5mp camera at the back.

I think the networks will try to gouge it price-wise as the standard Galaxy S outright is still fair bit lower than the Iphone 4 overseas; I envisage they’d try to push its price into the equivalent spec Iphone territory (probably in line with the 16gig model).

I think Vodafone should bring it in as they’re part of the Open Handset Alliance (which ties it to Android directly, as are Samsung). I won’t go anywhere near the optus network either way, I’d buy one in from the UK before doing that.

  • What is the warranty period of this phone with Optus?
Given the build quality (not bad, just plastic-ky) - should i bother for extra $50 annual warranty?

    • +1

From Choice magazine - 24 months:

      Choice magazine…

A mobile phone you buy as part of a service contract is covered by the statutory warranty for the life of that contract. That's the latest advice from the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) on mobile phone service contracts.
A phone that is part of a 24-month service contract, for example, is covered by free unlimited repairs if it fails or develops faults during the entire 24-month contract period

      • aha - thanks dude!

  • Could HTC Desire or Samsung Galaxy S be rooted?
If they can be rooted, can you get new Android version Froyo onto them as easily as rooted Nexus one?
Will they need a different Froyo image prepared by HTC/Samsung for their specific hardware/drivers etc?

    • You need a hacked ROM for those phones, that is one that has been cooked up by someone and isn't official. So it will have limited testing etc. and yes the phone needs to be rooted.

The difference is that the Nexus ROM is made by google, so it is official, and you don't need a rooted Nexus to get FroYo either. (you can also put hacked ROMs on a rooted Nexus too if you want, but with the others you have no choice, it is only hacked ROMs until HTC/Sammy pull their fingers out (if ever)).

      this should answer your question

      • Yeah you can put Froyo on Desire/Galaxy S but they won't work the way they should. What people should realise is that Froyo on the Nexus is ported over to the Desire and Galaxy. So some stuff will always be not quite right. Until HTC or Samsung release an update, there's bound to be some problems.

I have the Modaco custom rom with FRF91 on my Desire. It has some issues. It may/may not affect you depending on how you use your phone.

  • I would push for further discounts on the $49 price…speak to disconnections / retentions, you might get a few extra dollars off

  • -1

push for discounts on $49? what discounts can you get?

  • +1

Same as rodh, I've purchased this phone a few weeks ago from Handtec. Incredible piece of kit, that's for sure. A few downsides: No Flash, a little bit of stalling thanks to TouchWiz & my battery has been going down pretty quickly (supposedly this gets better)…
But, I've now rooted the phone and am running a custom rom —> This thing now absolutely flies. No stalling at all & woah, 720p shows on this screen is to die for! Prepare to make some of your iPhone loving friends mightly jealous! :)

    • what custom rom are you using? I know there's cyanogen mod..

      • +1

There's the Modaco one. android.modaco.com. Don't think CyanogenMod has any support for devices besides Nexus One. CM6 will but no idea when that's releasing.

  • edit: nvm

I have a HTC Desire and I just wanna tell any prospective buyers. Do not buy HTC products. Here's why. HTC Hero got the 2.1 update after the whole world saw 2.2. Which is around 6 months late.

HTC Desire will be seeing 2.2 before Christmas according to their PR. Which is around the time Gingerbread will launch according to Google. HTC has the WORST support in the history of mobile phones.

Samsung may not have a better track record, but hey.. as of now Galaxy S is a MUCH better phone than anything HTC has to offer to the GSM markets.

    • -2

      No, not really. See here…
      http://www.itwire.com/your-it-news/mobility/40234-when-will-…

      and I quote…
"HTC — which has several Android handsets in Australia, notably the HTC Desire and HTC Legend that are sold with the 2.1 firmware — said that the 2.2 OTA could be expected next quarter although a date was not confirmed."

      as opposed to…
"Representatives for Samsung — which recently launched its Galaxy S handset in Australia — evaded the topic, not responding to a request for comment on the issue"

So given that a Desire is as close to a Nexus as you can get hardware wise, it will be far more likely to get updates (official or not) ported quickly compared to the SGS. Also the SGS doesn't really bring anything more to the table in the first place. So I say go Desire (if you can't get a N1 that is)

      • +1

You're using a third-party source dude. The information I gave came from HTC's global PR. It's not what someone else is SPECULATING.

        • +1

"It takes time to port all of our applications over to Froyo and then make sure that it is running well on each of our devices. That’s not like a one week kind of project. We need to make sure that our applications are taking advantage of the Froyo features. To make sure that they’re all running properly on the OS now that it’s a new version. And then to make sure that it's running on our hardware as well as we expect. I would believe that we would be done with our Froyo updates before Christmas." - Eric Lin.

@ragflan: And you're high if you're saying SGS has nothing more to offer than the Desire. The SGS has a much better CPU in Hummingbird that delivers almost twice the speed that Desire's Snapdragon does even though they're both 1Ghz. I confirmed this by walking into an Optus store and running the Quadrant benchmark that scored 950+ on 2.1 on SGS. On 2.1, my Desire fully-clocked to 998Mhz scored a measly 480-530 with no background apps. SGS, i just ran the test without setting clock-speed or anything.

The GPU is virtually crap on the Desire, you can compare that by playing any decent game. The SGS screen is much more brilliant both under sunlight and in normal light. SGS has more internal memory as well. I have the Desire man. You dont have to lie about it being better than the SGS. If you really believe what you said, then it just goes to show that you never even touched the SGS so far. It's definitely the better device. It's not subject to opinion. If you like the form-factor better then thats your opinion. But hardware is a fact.

            • @ragflan: So as with my original point, since both companies have a proven bad track record for supporting updates, you might as well get the phone that has better hardware. Unless you're like me - stuck with the Desire. I hate HTC, SenseUI, TouchWiz, MotoBlur what not. Manufacturers should just stop messing with Android and release it as it is. There's enough customisation available in the market. We dont need more skins that slow down updates.

              • -1

                @ragflan: Have you finished?

                • @stumo: Sorry man. Its just that ignorance spreads really quickly and knowledge takes forever. Your comments about how Desire is better is going to prompt some sad s.o.b to buy it and regret it later.

                  • @ragflan: Cool, all I'm saying is this…

With an N1 you will have had 2.2 FroYo for months by now (like me). So with that benchmark I get 1300+, right here, right now. Sure an SGS it will beat that score, one day. But by then I'm fairly certain my N1 will be running 3.0, and I don't think Sammy will upgrade a 6+mo handset to 3.0 when they have other newer devices to push. So you will be stuck with running community ROMs and all that that brings.

With the Desire all I'm saying is that because its so close to an N1, stable community ROMs will be more readily available since it is easier to port than a SGS.

I'm actually in the market right now for a new phone (need 850 for telsra), and I'm probably going to get another N1. I thought long and hard about waiting for the Sammy "captivate" (non iPhone clone 850 version of SGS), but those things above still put me off (and lack of camera flash). So I'll wait out this round of hardware updates and get something truly great middle of next year.

                    • @stumo: Yeah I agree with you. N1 is definitely the device to own if you're about updates. If you couldn't care less, then Samsung is better. Yeah, Desire will have ports sooner than SGS. In fact, there's a 2.2 port right now with Sense as well on Modaco forums. But Im just as sure, SGS will have a 2.2 port way before Gingerbread.

So yeah. Im just saying, dont recommend the Desire over the SGS. I reckon SGS is in every other department a better device than any other on the GSM market. And I'll bet that Samsung is gonna beat HTC to releasing the official 2.2 update. In fact SGS is set to out sell all other Android devices which gives them more incentive to update 2.2 asap since they went all out on one device. HTC has a zillion Android devices to support. They don't care about updates. They'll just release a new phone and support old ones long after no one cares about them.

Speaking of N1, I'd give a up a lung or something if someone lets me get a GSM Droid X today. But yeah, Droid X only for CDMA. I wanted an N1. I got the Desire from UK for 580 when AUD was strong. N1 was costing me 750-850. So I bought Desire. BIG TIME REGRET.

                      • +1

@ragflan: You could sell your desire on eBay. There are reports on the 'pool about buying the SGS on the $49 optus plan, and then cancelling it after a few days and only having to pay out $560 and you keep the phone. That is cheap. You should be able to cover that cost easily by selling your Desire.

                        • @stumo: Really? I thought that was some kinda misinformation… I read on whirlpool a week or so ago that the 560 is the charge for the phone and does not include termination of contract fees. Like 49 x remaining months.

                          • @ragflan: It's the other way around if anything - read the T&C, $560 is the termination fee for the $49 social cap.

You then have to pay out any repayments (which are $0). - but this is the fuzzy bit people were concerned about.

Some people on whirlpool have ported their new optus number over to a prepaid sim and then called optus to ask how much remains on their account - and it was just the $560.

I am very tempted to do this myself ;)
