Is this what the game has become or is it just a separate mode? I thought the game was going to be a Day Z type setup?

  This is a separate mode. Originally it was part of the main game but they decided to split the game into two for extra $$$. You have H1Z1: Just Survive which is their survival mode, and you've got H1Z1: King of the Kill which is their Hunger Games style deathmatch mode, and the one that seems to get more support than the survival mode most of us bought the game for.
