Furnishing a New Home !

Hi Ozbargain!

I will need to furnish a new home from scratch later down the track. There is no urgency on when I need to buy things, but I want to put together a strategy to create the best bargains possible.

I'm thinking mostly about appliances at the moment like TV, speakers, fridge, washing machine, dryer etc.

My current thought:
- put together a shopping list of everything I need and then figure out which large retailers can sell, deliver and install most of the list
- wait for a gift card sale before buying a whole stack of them (JB/Good guys/Myer etc), hopefully they will last a year
- wait for EOFY or boxing day sale and offer to buy entire shopping list if they can discount further
- then pay with gift cards

Let me know what you guys and girls think! If it's too risky or not the best idea or whatever!

My advice. Do it over time. Don't be in such a hurry to buy everything. Keep an eye out for sales.

Best of all enjoy your new home.

Make use of gumtree to pickup some cheap furniture.

Things like office chairs, lounge chairs, sometimes go for less than $50 and even free. I managed to score a set of 4 IKEA bar stools for $40.

Then when deals pop up, replace old furniture with new ones.

    • thanks for the tip! I think I will be camping out gumtree for the next few months !

      • just beware of upholstered furniture like sofas.

If you talked to the owner, and you find that they owned pets => possible contamination of dog pee / cat pee / dogturd / fleas.

Gumtree for furniture like what Scrimshaw said, and wait for an Good Guys ebay 20% off for electronics such as Fridges, Washing machines and TVs.
If you're lucky, they have a catalgoue running and the ebay discount on top of that will give you a bargainception.

Yes I would do it over time. Just wait for good deals to pop up.

And in the interim you can get some second hand stuff and then upgrade it if you need to or when good deals present.

I bid $10 on a futon on eBay and thought I would just use it until I find something better. Over 4 years down the track now and it's still my main lounge.

I furnished a 2 bedroom apartment for $1000 when I first moved in. Including bed, fridge, washing machine, dining suite, microwave, lounge/futon, crockery and cutlery.

When you first move in you don't need much more than a bed for the first night and a fridge in the first week.

an issue with getting interim furniture sometimes it remains for a lot longer than intended and then you furnish around it.
The interior design if you wanted to start from scratch is compromised.
Not to say that you can't have a good design with interim furniture..

Rockdale train station used to be a hotspot for discarded milk crates. With some creativity, you could furnish your home next to free.
