Before anyone asks I ran a search and there's no current deals. Can anyone recommend a lightning cable that's a decent ruggedness and length that doesn't cost a small fortune? Preferably from a store I can visit in person rather via a reseller in China.

I am wondering the same thing.
I see Target has a short version for $8 but I don't know about the quality:

Check your local target or kmart. Sometimes cables are marked down for clearance. Have had a couple from there and they were good enough.
