Euro trip 2017

Hi guys!

Need your wisdom and expertise please.

My wife and I are planning a trip to Europe around September next year.

The countries we would love to visit are:
Greece
Croatia
Prague
Amsterdam

Was wondering what the most cost effective route would be, or any other ozb suggestions on trying to keep costs low eg accommodation, food?

Seat61 has been really handy, but would love first hand experience tips too.

Appreciate your help!!!!!

  • TripAdvisor.com

    • trip advisor is full of dodgy comments.

    • make sure you avoid like the plague ALL Australian school holidays for flights to Europe in both directions.

Eg. some people don't fly out of their city, they might go via Sydney to get out of OZ.

Also you didn't say which airport you wanted to fly out of in OZ.

Some airlines fly into BNE, but not SYD & v.v.

  • Greece and Croatia by boat/cruise. So cruise the greek islands by boat this is the best way to see greece, then get a cruise to dubrovnic from greece, then book an internal tour that takes you north. Then train/bus or plane(quickest) it to Prague and plane it to Amsterdam.

I have done each country separately but if I were to link it all together i would do as suggested.

Costs in Europe usually depends how early you can book especially transport.

    • On a cruise ship for 5 days in greece. It was great. Lots of islands you can go to.

    • Cruising through Greece and to Croatia sounds amazing! Did you stay overnight on board or just day trips?

      • Did the greek islands over 12 nights on a cruise, 9 nights on a ship and 3 nights on a yacht which dropped us off in kings landing ;D
There are a few companies to choose from. Different options too, party, private, luxury, family.

  • How old are you? If you are under 35 and want to experience the night life, check out MEDexperience. I did a trip with them from Greece to Croatia and loved it!

    • Also, check out EUrail passes,

Also, for internal flights looking into open jaw flights, they're priced like a return flight (cheaper), but you can use it to go to multiple destinations.

In terms of your main flight though, I recommend flying with Scoot or Air Asia to BKK, chilling for a few days, then getting a Norwegian Airways flight to either Olso, Copenhagen or Stockholm (their three direct routes). It's a great airline and if you get in early, you can get to Europe return from under 1K.

The other way to do it is to sign up the the ANZ black deal and use the frequent flyer points sign up bonus to get you a flight to Europe from SE Asia (again, in order to get to Asia, use scoot or air Aisa)

      • Would be a great way to break up the long flight! Went to Copenhagen last year, it was really nice. We also have 250k Velocity points to play around with. But not sure what European flights virgin offer…

        • Do they offer many? I know Qantas do, but from memory, Virgin's offerings are pretty poor.

        • @DCO90:

Didn't think they do. So unsure how to leverage my Velocity points…

  • +1

renting a car can be pretty cheap. I did it 2 years ago for 4 weeks around europe. ~4500kms. cost about $35 a day. you get to do more stuff i.e. "wow, that random place over there looks interesting, let's go"
