Kogan 55" 4K Ultra HD LED TV (LG Panel) $479 + Shipping

200

Noticed Ruslan shopping his wares on ACA this evening (no, I am not a viewer, it was on in the break room at work I swear!), checked out some of the deals online and this one stood out - I don't think I've even seen a large 4K TV under $500 (this one launched last month at $569), and according to the linked post has an LG panel (if that counts for anything).

I've never used Kogan electronics so can't provide feedback but for a TV that would get a couple of hours use per week max I am strongly considering it to replace the LG currently in my living room.

Delivery was around $50 to post code 4000, and claimed dispatch time 2-3 days. There was an offer to extend the warranty to 3 years but I'd imagine consumer laws would cover it for that at least?

Aldi have their 55" 4k for $499 starting on the 17th if you rather wait and get one at a store so you can return.

There was a Panasonic 55" 4K a few weeks back for around $700 after gift cards and bonus item, better to wait for one of these deals rather then buy a rubbish TV with poor UI.

NOPE. Consumer Law doesn't necessarily work like that.

Never "bank" on this, as it is an argument about "would reasonably expect" and furthermore the ACCC clearly states that a cheap product can not be expected to last as long as a more expensive one.

So, what happens is that the consumer has to call the retailer's bluff, threaten to go to ACCC or Fair Trading or even take them to Court if necessary. It's the bluff that will get you a repair or refund, rather than any particular "law" as such.

Luckily, at least the website states: "This Product is offered and supplied by Kogan Australia Pty Ltd pursuant to the Terms and Conditions"

If it was supplied by Kogan Hong Kong then you would have zero chance, as AU laws cannot touch them.

    • Good points, obviously going to a regulator is the less preferred method, but I suppose having a debit / credit card that offers an additional year of warranty with a purchase would be quite handy, though I've not had experience with this before.

  • The panels are probably made by LG, but they aren't the same grade/quality as they use in their own products

    • Indeed. It's an industry practice to bin panels. The 'rejects' go to cheap places like Kogan.

Any ideas on the cheapest tv that can take full advantage of ps4 Pro (read: HDR). Thanks in advance

  • Thanks tetsuma that's great stuff. I don't think the cheaper brands are making HDR tvs yet are they… I'm keen in 40" but keep hearing it's too small to notice the benefits. What do people think?

    • Depends on how far your TV is. If you're gonna use the 40" as a pc monitor then it should be fine. If it's about 2m away then 60" minimum. The point of 4k is you can sit it closer without seeing pixels.
