Australia Post Leaving Parcels on Top of Mailbox on Busy Road during Storms. Can They Do This?

So I come home from work yesterday to find a book I ordered just sitting on top of my mailbox.
This happened last week on Friday as well.
I live on a main road and my mailbox is right against the fence where anyone could easily grab the parcel.

Worst thing is it rained pretty heavily like 10 mins after I got home. Lucky I got home in time. Being summer little storms like this are gonna happen all the time. As it did rain on Friday arvo as well.

Can Australia post do this? Just leave my parcel right out the front for the entire traffic to see?
What if I got home a bit later and the book was soaked from the storm. Does Australia Post cover it?
I'm wondering if it's worth ordering items anymore if that's what's gonna happen to them. Maybe I should complain about it.

What do other fellow ozbargainers think?

This is the reason I use the parcel locker service that Aus Post has for free. I have a parcel locker location near the train station I go to.

The parcel lockers are great - while they work.

I had a couple of separate instances recently where the parcel locker door wouldn't / couldn't open, when I asked the staff at the local business center if they could open the locker manually they told me that once the parcel had been placed in the locker it couldn't be opened manually for 72 hours. When I spoke to customer support a couple of days later they told me this was not accurate and that the staff have the ability to open the lockers at any time, bit frustrating.

      • Staff can definitely open them at any time. I've done it myself.

I usually just have the package redirected while in transit to the parcel locker. Saves time and hassle.

      • The only issue i've had so far is one package that went to the Post Office instead. I asked the guy at the post office why it didn't go to the locker, the reply was "I don't know, they just dropped it off here instead"

        • I've had that. I also got message lockers were all in use.

      • Not as frustrating as opening a locker that's empty and getting no answer from AP

    • Only problem with parcel lockers is that anything sent as a large letter is not usually put into the lockers, they are usually forwarded to the home address associated with the locker. So, such as in this case, if it were a small book of 20mm thickness or less, it may have been sent as a large letter so back to the same problem.

    • Unless they've changed it, the big problem for a lot of people is they will only accept Aus Post delivered items to the parcel locker, so unless you know for sure what service the business will use for deliveries, it's a big gamble.

      • I'm pretty sure the couriers end up taking it to the Depot and then Auspost then deliver to the locker the next day. I had this with an item sent with Startrack.

        • Startrack is owned by Auspost so I'd expect them to deliver.
FedEx, UPS, DHL etc are the ones I'd like to deliver to one.

    • That is epic

  • Australia Post was corporatised. While still owned by the government they are now supposedly run like a private company so costs have gone up and service has plummeted. They can do it, but probably won't retain customers with standards like that.

Its hard to please all the people.
I would normally rather get my parcels even if there is a risk of rain or theft than having to chase them up at the post office or worse, a courier depot.
Other people don't feel this way.
Where it is available, I tick 'authority to leave' boxes when I order, and/or special instructions like leave the parcel on the doorstep.
If I am ordering something valuable I pay for a signature delivery and suck it up for the likely trip to the post office.

I also try and cut all the delivery people some slack this time of year as their job becomes 5 times busier. The posties I chat too take getting people's mail and parcels to them safely and speedily seriously, but have to make judgement calls all the time about how best to do that.

Since in this case, literally no harm was done, and everyone at the post office will be run off their feet, it is likely that complaining will probably have no result.
At best, it will ensure you get carded 100% of the time, which is probably not something you want either.

Ive also had experiences where they leave a parcel slip and take the parcel away without even knocking. My girlfriend had this happen last week, goes down and hears a noise sees the van driving away and finds the slip. Not a knock at all. It is the most frustrating thing cause then we need to wait for a few hours for it to get to the post office and waste our time to go there and have to pick it up

    • Happens ALL the time at our place.
I think our postie can't be bothered walking up the slightly steep driveway/walk upstairs to the front door.

  • No, it isn't ok for AP to leave anything on top of a mailbox and I would report it to the local sorting office as well as to AP's head office.

  • Contact Aust Post and they can sort it - I had my wallet stolen and had to arrange replacement cards, licences etc. The postie kept leaving mail in the open top slot meant for papers/junk mail instead of into the locked mailbox itself which I wasn't comfortable with given I was expecting new credit cards, drivers licence etc.

I submitted a feedback query via the AP website and received a response the next day - they had contacted the local delivery centre who had a word to the postie, and a couple of days later my mail was being inserted into my mail box properly. :)
