Laptop for under $1000 for uni student

Hey guys looking to buy a laptop for my daughter who will be starting uni next year. So main use would be web browsing, microsoft office work, photoshop, watching movies etc. Hoping to buy before Xmas and have seen a few laptops come up here and was hoping for a bit of advice as to which would be better value for money.

The 2 i'm comparing right now are:

Asus UX303UA-C4037T

Intel i5 6200U
8GB Ram
Intel HD graphics 520
256G SSD
13.3" Touch Screen
$789

Dell Inspiron 15 5000
https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/279728
7th Generation Intel® Core™ i5-7200U Processor (3M Cache, up to 3.1 GHz)
Windows 10 Pro
8GB Ram
256GB SSD
4GB AMD Radeon™ R7 M445 Graphics Card
15"
weight: 2.33kg
$959

I've had a dell inspiron before and it works well but has a very cheap plastic feel to it wondering if the build has improved? Any thoughts on these 2? Seems like the processor on the dell is newer and also comes with 4gb graphics card so i guess would be good for video? Not sure about gaming. Is it worth the extra $170 for a newer processor and graphics card? Any other laptops i could consider?

Thanks for any assistance.

both are pretty good looking in the specs department. For Uni though i would be prioritising portability above everything else as it does become hassle to lug around a large computer around. There is quite a difference in weight and form factor between them, as the Asus is quite a bit lighter and smaller than the Dell (The asus is 1.5kg). It'll be easier to fit in a bag and carry around to and from Uni, and the laptop looks like its only used basic tasks aswell, i would say get Asus.

Being a uni student myself with a 15" Laptop I find it too big. 13.3 would be perfect as the one I had before my current laptop was an 11" (which was too small for my liking)

I agree with the above poster and would say that portability would be the main priority. Have you had a look at the Xiamo Mi notebooks? they look awesome and have some great specs within the price range you're looking for.

  • Thanks for the replies portablitily had not really been a consideration i was just trying to get as much of a specced up machine for the price. @kujikabuto are there any you can suggest?

  • Get a Lenovo thinkpad T series/Dell latitude/HP elitebook for durability and warranty (availability of parts is generally better). They are also easier to take apart yourself.

  • Lenovo has sales usually so have a look there
