Lavazza Modo Mio vs Nespresso Insisa for mugs of coffee

Looking to get parents a small pod machine for caravan trips. Old man won't put up with a small coffee. My Map machine does a mug (just). I've seen a Modo Mio and it wasn't even close to the Map machine. Looked like 2, maybe even 3 pods for a mug? Is a Nespresso better, same, worse? cheers

  • You have to either dilute with milk or more water or use 3 pods to get a mug from the Inissia. That said the Inissia fills up a mug well when you press the large button and add a full aerocino of milk. Just use a strong pod so the milk doesn't dilute the coffee too much.

  • I suggest getting a small delonghi with the ese pod system

  • On Modo Mio's and other pod machines, you can hold typically hold down the 'shot' button if you want to fill up a mug.

But that's totally over-extracted coffee. Pods machines are supposed to give shots, anywhere from about 15 mL (sweeter) - 60 mL (more bitter). As soon as that stream goes blonde, it's done and anything more is bitter.

Long black/Americanos - you pull the shot on top of a 3/4 cup of hot water.

Lattes/Caps - you add milk to the shot.

  • With Modo Mio I heat a third to half mug if milk in the microwave (about 25 secs), then use a nice strong capsule, draw for only about 15 secs max…then release capsule and press on again to release just hot water.. to fill the rest of the way, pretty darn good. Maybe two capsules 15 secs each on top of the milk for a morning wake-up coffee. You can't expect a capsule of any sort to fill a full mug on it's own, just the same as an "espresso shot" of any sort wouldn't. Just drawing until the juice is distinctly lighter in colour will get all the flavour you are going to get, drawing extra through just brings in bitterness/thinness… Not more flavour!
