Landline + ADSL2 + Mobile = $115 Per Month. Please Help Reduce The Cost

I'm currently paying:

  • $30 Telstra landline - I don't use it for calls, it's so I can have internet
  • $60 ADSL2 - I don't online-game, do watch youtube, and may download a couple of movie torrents per week
  • $25 mobile - I only call & SMS one person, plus a couple of local calls per month

Total: $115 per month

Can anyone see a way I can reduce this total? For example, is there a mobile plan that covers all of these in one? I download 20GB or less per month, so maybe 10-15GB with speed shaping would be ok. (Yes, I know speed shaping is a 'landline' not a mobile thing, but I'm trying to find a way get 'untied'.)

i.e. I don't necessarily have to be tied to the house. I use my laptop Wi-Fi at the library, or McDonalds when traveling - and a mobile phone is obviously already wireless. ;-)

does tpg service your area ? could shave 30$ right there , unlimited bundle for 60 ( no calls included )

and jeenee mobile has a 30gb unlimited calls/text plan for $50, but thats 3g only

    • Is 3G similar (real) speed to ADSL2? By 'real' I mean, not what they quote as maximum, but in real life. e.g. Watching youtube, downloading a video torrent.

I've had my laptop set up once before, accessing telstra air through my mobile via bluetooth. I'm thinking if the speed is similar, not only could I do that and ditch the landline, but I could have have internet streaming radio in the car through the car bluetooth stereo, and have internet anywhere I go.

      • no idea really never used my mobile net for that , you could always pick up a prepaid sim switch 4g off and give it a trial for minimal costs ( jeenee use optus network i believe )

This is what works best for me (I tried many different solutions over the years):

ADSL + landline phone: Internode Bundled Easy Reach ADSL2+ Plans, broadband (100GB per month - no lower data plan) + phone: $69.99 + charges for phone calls. Details: http://www.internode.on.net/residential/broadband/adsl/easy_…

Mobile phone: Amaysim Pay As You Go, pre paid or post paid. If you opt for post paid plan automated billing Amaysim will charge you only if: "you've spent more than $10 or if we haven't sent you a bill in 3 months, whichever comes first". Each call or SMS is charged, so your bill depends on your usage: this plan is NOT suitable for higher volume user. My mobile usage is on average below $10 per month (very few calls or SMS-es). Details: https://www.amaysim.com.au/plans/mobile-plans/as-you-go

Typically (again, very low mobile phone usage, low landline phone usage) I spent around $80-$100 per month. Hope this helps.

If you have got a Telstra line do check out BELONG.. $55 for 100 gig all up.

  • Go with Virgin Mobile 12GB Plan - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/274072 and cancel everything else
    OR
You need to workout if you can get NBN or at least a naked ADSL plan. If you can, then use that for internet ($50-$60) and then apply for prepaid for mobile. Top-up $10/month or go for the 12 month expiry option.

the mobile - I'd suggest vaya - they often have deal for a "pay for the whole year" -4 months or 5 months ago I paid ~$120 for unlimited texts and calls and 1gb data - so about $10 a month. I use my phone for ebay, ozbargain, hotmail (i.e. no youtube or such) and haven't had a problem with data. they are on optus network and I have no problem with reception around Bris and else where I have been.

I was with amaysim for years and was only calling/ texting 1 person and some how(I do know how) ended up using too much and it was costing $$$ every month with auto recharge..

  • TPG ADSL 20Gb for $40/mo. Phone line included, but you don't have to use it… Or $50/mo for 50Gb naked broadband (I.e. no phone line needed).
Then there's several mobile plans ~$20 a month. Others have mentioned some above. Amaysim, Vaya, Jeenee or even TPG.

Boom, just halved your telco bills!

It may not be possible at all. Some areas are serviced by Telstra infrastructure only, and you have to have Telstra landline installed to connect to the Internet. If you go with another provider, for example TPG, Internode, iiNet, etc, and check your specific house address, only "Off-Net" plans would be listed which are less attractive and include additional $30 for Telstra landline component. Some providers (for example Optus) would refuse to connect you at this address. Example: checking my address on TPG page you linked excludes naked broadband and most other attractive plans, and lists only plans which must have Telstra landline; the prices are considerably higher. I am guessing this is similar to the OP situation who said: "Telstra landline(…) so I can have internet".

  • Internet - $90 for ADSL is a bit much, but it depends a lot on your area. If I remember correctly, Clubtelco is pretty cheap and works on Telstra lines.
Phone - call and sms one person, you could always get that person to be using the same provider as you, then your calls and sms will be free. In that case, phone plans < $15 would do just fine.

  • You could go with iinet that way your just with one company.

    1. Naked DSL Internet Plans 250GB for $59.99 per month or the liimitless for $69.99 per month
      (https://www.iinet.net.au/internet-products/broadband/naked-d…)
    2. Iinet mobile for $19.99 per month for 2GB Data and $400 talk & text
