33 discs? Why don't they bring out the bluray already…

    • +3

I reckon. It would get pretty annoying getting up and down every handful of episodes to swap a disc. You're better off downloading the 720p TV rips that are available. Not only are they 16:9 and in high definition, you can watch them all without having to switch discs and you're guaranteed that all the episodes will work.

      • +2

        Not only are they 16:9

        Not a good thing.

If you absolutely must have 16:9 HD versions though, don't get the 720p HDTV rips. They're the syndication cuts, and have been edited down to fit more ads in. Look for the 1080p webrips.

      • +1

I definitely think the 16:9 versions are superior to the 4:3 aspect ratio. There is only minor cropping performed on the later seasons (the first isn't too good I grant you that). I'm currently watching Seinfeld on Stan. I would never go back to the crappy DVDs.

        • +2

The whole series was shot on 4-perf 35mm film, which is academy ratio, or 1.375:1 (very close to 4:3, or 1.33:1). The HD version was tilt-and-scanned for the whole 9 seasons.

The reason many other 90s sitcoms don't look as bad in 16:9 is that most sitcoms at the time were shot on 3-perf 35mm (although even then, I'd rather watch it in the aspect ratio they had in mind when filming).

        • +1

Cropping is pretty severe on all seasons, it just wasn't at any stage shot 16:9 safe.

Sony are in a no-win situation when it comes to any potential blu-ray. Purists will lose their minds if it's 16:9, and the "fill my screen" brigade will bitch to high heaven if its OAR when a 16:9 version is available.

        • @Villan: I wish every show in this situation could do what the Freaks and Geeks blu-ray did and include both in the same set. Probably a little easier for a series with 18 episodes though as opposed to 180.

        • +2

@Villan: Can recall back in the early days of DVD when 4:3 TVs were still dominant, pretty much every enthusiast was a pro-letterboxing, 'as the director intended' purist. Those who preferred fullscreen were considered clueless idiots.

What's strange is how the enthusiast community largely accepts 4:3 content being cropped to fill 16:9 screens, rather than applying the same principles.

        • @gilbarc: since one of the above comments was talking about Stan, while I understand the two separate aspect ratios for physical release could be an issue I see no reason why they can't offer higher resolution 4:3 video for streaming.

Or how about not breaking the law.

    • Maybe if they edited out all the non-funny bits it would fit on one dvd? (runs away…)

      • All the non-funny bits certainly would fit on one dvd ;)

        • Har-har…I saw what you did there.

Nearly 17yrs since it finished and still can't be beat.

I still think of Amazon as the 'jerk store' when they says "does not ship to your address"

    • +15

Oh yeah? Well Amazon just called me, and they're running out of you!

      • +3

What's the difference? You're their all time best seller!

  • Do region 1 dvds work here?

    • +1

No. Australia is Region 4 in DVD land. Unless you have a mulit-region DVD player of course.

      • +2

As of a few years ago (haven't looked into it recently), the vast majority of DVD players sold in Australia were either region-free out of the box, or have a code to make it region-free or to switch regions.

(Unfortunately, the situation wasn't the same for blu-ray players)

    • -2

Serious question? Most players are capable of being region free, many automatically are.

      • +1

It's a legit question. I don't know anyone using DVD players anymore, most people just use a PS4 or Xbox or Blu Ray player, and region matters.

        • +1

Further to this, practically all blu-ray players are DVD disc region free (meaning that they can play DVDs from any region), however they obviously have their own region A/B/C region coding when it comes to blu-ray discs.

Best show ever! Everytime i have a hard time i will watch Cosmo Kramer the AssMan and laugh :)

  • +5

The end of this scene has to be one of my favourite, ever.

    Frank is brilliant.

    • +2

The outtakes for that scene are pretty great too.

  • Good deal, paid this much for just one season back in the day

  • Anyone know if the special features have writer's commentary??

  • If they run out of stock, no soup for you!

  • Way too much effort. We have the full series on DVD but ended up downloading it as it was just so much easier to watch rather than using DVDs. Same with Stargate SG1 - just bring it out on Bluray ffs!

  • You should probably mention that these are Region 1 and won't work unless you have a region free player.
