Spare Car Key (Honda Civic) in Melbourne

I lost my spare car key and now left with only one. Went to Mister Mint and they quoted $100! Because of the chip inside they said. Just wondering if this is normal price or are there other cheaper alternatives? Car is 2001 Honda Civic Sedan.

Thanks

  • Yes it's expensive due to the chip in newer cars. I am not sure if 2001 Honda had this feature.

  • Cheapest alternative would be to get 2 regular metal non chipped keys cut. Cut the key bit off your original key and stick the chip end inside the steering column near the ignition. This way your no frills metal keys will work to trick the immobilizer and drive the car.

But $100 is cheap and sounds like a clone key, had to pay 300 for a hilux key and 800 for a bmw from the dealer.

    • It would also make you car less secure. I would not recommend this.

    • Thanks. Can I stick the top end of the old key to the new key? Would that work?

      • you could but it would be pointless as you will still only have 1 chip.

This is done for some of the older cars with a factory immobilizer and have an aftermarket remote ignition starter installed.

But otherwise no one will really know you've done this and you would be unlucky if someone wanted to steal your 2001 Honda civic, most desperate criminals are opportunistic and would rather just ransack your car for valuables.

Just do your own risk assessment and go from there.

It might actually be just as easy getting a key off ebay and doing your own programming if your car is the same model. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fi-8e473b08

        • This is to program central locking only. Its not the immobiliser

  • $100 is a good price. I paid $160 for a mitsubishi one and most places said they couldnt even clone it after having them try. Dealer wanted $800
