MIUI - Automatic Task Killing and Supressed Notificaions

Hi folks.

I've looked around with unsatisfactory results and am asking here since Xiaomi is pretty popular here. I'm struggling to keep some apps alive and get reliable notifications.

One app I (used to) use all the time is "Life Reminders." It normally provides a pop-up at a given time, turning the phone on if required and showing it on the lock screen. In MIUI it seems that it only does that within a certain period (maybe an hour or so?) of using the app, else it gets killed. I have tried all of the following:

Security app -> App Battery Saver -> Life Reminders -> No Restrictions
Settings -> Lock screen & passowrd -> Wake lock screen for notifications - > On
Settings -> Notifications & Status bar -> App notifications -> Life Reminders - > (All enabled)
Settings -> Battery -> Manage apps battery use -> power saving modes off

I also had a flashlight app and used a widget to have the torch instantly accessible on my home screen. Again, it works for a while after using the app, then dies until I open the app again. other widgets like GMail and some calendar widgets keep working.

I have even tried using the task locker with the apps, with the inconvenience of having to enter a password to start them up, but except for one app (Brightness Display - which gives a OHD-like brightness slider on the screen) it seems to have no effect.

I am running ADW launcher - it's never had any adverse effects before on other devices but not sure if it hurts here.

Any feedback most appreciated.

  • Security app -> Permissions -> Autostart

    • Yes sorry done that too.

Also tried with NiLS installed but that didn't help either.

  • Root your phone. Install greenify and supress apps which try to turn themselves on automaticallynot generally supported by autostart
Will keep enough memory free to keep the app you wanna keep active , running in the bg

    • Ta. Will root if it's the last resort.

  • Root can be unrooted as well
Buying an android and not rooting (unless not under contract) —>
With MIUI rooting just gives you so many possibilities

Press your task list button, swipe down on the app and select "lock".
Flashlight - press the power button to display the lock screen, hold down the Home button until flashlight turns on. Alternatively, trigger it from the notification area.

    Also:
Go to Settings, Type "Developer options" in the search. Change these settings: Memory optimization = LOW, Turn on MIUI optimization= OFF

    • Locking apps in the task list works for me too.

    • That torch feature is great - thanks.

But with my launcher (adw) I don't have access to the task list unfortunately.

      • How could you lose it? It's one of the three buttons on the bottom of any Android phone.

        • Unfortunately adw launcher uses that button for its own settings. But I like the (simplicity of) the launcher enough to live with that.

        • @thevofa: maybe you can temporarily switch launchers to get it set up and switch back? But if the developer options was enough, then maybe it's not necessary.

  • Click the lock button on the apps

  • I never use xiaomi, but on my huawei P9, I can set some apps kept running at the background under the battery setting. Might be similar on xiaomi.

The most complete answer to this question I have seen documented is here:

I do all the steps, except step 5 and that is effective for my apps that need to allow push notifications (E.g. fb messenger)

    • Thanks. That echoes a lot of the above. I'm getting better results now - I think it may have been the developer options that finally did the trick.

  • Good thread. Just bought mate 8 therefore very curious about people talking not getting notifications when device is locked or screen is off.
Why they don't test something like this before releasing prosuct/software? Amazingly stupid.

    • I think you are mis-reading what the OP and everyone else is saying.
"Notifications when device is locked or screen is off" works fine for SMS, facebook, whatsapp, google calendar, skype, and most other apps. It is very specific 3rd party apps that seem to have an issue. Therefore, I think its more an issue with the app itself, rather than the phone.

      • I see. Yeah probably I have misunderstood, as there are so many threads about no notifications. I haven't finish setting up my mate 8 but will report back.
