Renovation - Apartment Flooring

Hi Guys,

Just want your opinion on laminated flooring & vinyl flooring.

I live in an apartment, and I currently have carpet for the flooring. I want to change it to some timber like flooring instead. Which do you recommend? Strata said I have to ensure that the noise transference is minimised through appropriate amount of underlay.

How much is it for laminated flooring and how much for vinyl? Approx.

I would probably rip out my own carpet.

Thanks

  • Hardwood flooring?

    • Hardwood flooring would cost too much

  • Laminated you can buy from as little as $15 per square metre, then about $50 per roll of underlay and then the trim costs.

Are you going to lay it yourself? I did some recently and it wasn't that difficult to do but it is hard work depending on how much you have to lay.

    • I have around 50 sqm to lay.how many sqm per roll of underlay?

  • As much of an el-cheapo-ne-bre as I am I would go hardwood anyday of the week. It's so easy to scratch laminate flooring, then you'll have to re-do the whole thing or that section. Whilst it may be cheaper do it twice in laminate than it is to do hardwood i'd still do hardwood.

As for noise transference, it really depends on the quality of the building from my experience. My girlfriend lived in a brand new apartment in a small complex, it was built horribly and it was impossible to walk around on the hardwood floors at night without receiving a noise complaint.. it wasn't horrible in the carpeted bedroom but it still wasnt great..

If the people below you can hear you walk around on your carpet flooring (even in the slightest..) it will be much louder for them with wood/laminate flooring. If they cannot hear you at all then you'd be fine.
