What Can You Do with Rego Fail (NSW)

I had my car serviced at a service centre.

They told me my tyres do not meet minimum requirement. They provided a quote to me, which i think is over priced. I told them i don't want to progress with the rego at this stage. They said they must submit the rego check as a fail.

I want to take my car to another local service centre to have it fixed and get the rego there.

Can i do that? Any other implication that i should be aware of?

Many Thanks!
Joe

  • What state are you?

  • Yes you can get the fault remedied at another repairer.

    • Thanks!
I should also tell the local repairer about this incident too?
I do intend to get it fixed, just don't agree with their price.

      • The second repairer? If it's evident there's a fault they'll find it so why do you want to withhold this information?

You can also just get new tyres and go back to the same service centre within 14 days for no extra cost.

That's how they make money, it's especially bad at franchise repair centres. I once failed rego because my brake pads were too worn. Problem was I had just changed them myself at home. They like to try it on if they think the person might fall for it.
Just ring aroung for prices for two new tyres. Then take it back or some where else.

    • i've brang my car to ONE unknown mechanic ONCE.

you'll never do that again. I have a few mechanics around who are mates who will do you a solid.

Never bring a car to someone who wont work with you.

  • here's a few things… its well known that you need 2mm minimum

you didnt check before giving it to the guy

if you use a mechanic who is friendly to you then you can go somewhere else like a Bob Jane etc. to get new tyres and then drive back to the mechanic to get it passed….

sure it adds up… rego and insurance and then tyres… you could be in the hole for $2k plus but thems the brakes.

  • They do need to submit the rego inspection as a fail. They hav a responsibility to clear it if you take the car back and it's fixed. You can get the repairs done anywhere and go back to them at no cost for the reinspection.

If you go somewhere else for the rego inspection you will need to pay the fee again and if they fail it, you get the car fixed and get a reinspection (with the right number of days)

Just get some legal tyres and take it back. Can get new, or second hand, or even borrow some if you want. Just as long as they are legal.
