Whats Your Best Way to Acquire Frequent Flyer Points/Loyalty Reward Points?

Hi all ozbargainers! first time poster so i hope this cuts the mustard. I think most people here would be keen on obtaining maximum amount of frequent flyer points for as little as possible. I like the classic credit card signups always a goodie like the current anz deal but how else have people got creative with points gathering? I had a friend who told me about buying gift cards from shopping centres (eg melbourne central) and then depositing the gift cards at a post office via bank at post! by his calculations it worked out to be about 1250 westpac altitude points for 2 dollars (hes got a black card) . Im yet to try this but its sure sounds like an awesome way to farm points. Anyone tried this? good experiences? bad experiences? im thinking if i do it enough i could buy not just flights but vouchers for shopping etc thoughts anyone?

There's no silver bullet other than CC sign up bonuses as you mentioned. Everything else requires actual flying or spending a lot of money on your rewards CC.

The key is to dedicate to a single program and focus your energies on that program by earning points from multiple sources, but make sure as much of your spending goes through your credit card as possible instead of using cash or eftpos.

FF points are highly over rated in general and should only be used as an added extra to normal spending. Don't spend extra money to get extra points as the maths never works in your favour (besides cc sign on bonuses).

    • i think this works out to be quite favourable though, if your spending 2 dollars to obtain say 1000 loyalty points, as an example i think altitude have 22000 points for 100 woolworths voucher…so 44 dollars for 100 dollar voucher. I just hope this works !

      • a lot of effort for a relatively small reward IMO.

  • Sounds like a cool trick but what type of gift card could possibly be deposited to a bank account? I don't understand that part, could you explain it some more?

    • After asking some more questions i think any sort of gift card that is eftpos based and can be used at multiple retailers - eg shopping centre gift cards like melbourne central and westfield gift cards. I did some further research on whirlpool i think there are some threads there that mention this process. So the process appears to be buy gift card from shopping centre , go to post office to do a bank @ post , have your own debit card ready, have your gift card , then do an account to account transfer!

      • I believe this is correct but I also think Aus Post staff are specifically instructed to not allow deposits from any sort of "gift card" regardless of whether it's EFTPOS or not. The system, I believe, allows it, but staff are instructed not to do it.

        • Mmmmm interesting I guess the only way to know is to test it out …with the Amex Westfield deal too this could be a winner - need to find a favourable postie I guess

        • @robin H: yep tested and it works - Westfield gift cards give the best bang for your buck but seems depending on which operator you get they may or may not let your buy cards in volume . Melbourne central issue gift cards via a vending machine so takes out the human element . Then went to my local post office and deposited into my debit card ! Any other testers let me know and other tricks

      • Is it possible to get cashout at a store like Woolies using the gift card?

return said goods and get refund give onto debit card.
    rinse and repeat…
