Question about Prepaid Mobile Plan

Dear fellow Ozbargainers. I have a question about prepaid mobile plan. I have been using postpaid plan and recently switched to prepaid. So it's quite new to me.

I am using Kogan prepaid at the moment. I came across the Boost S40 starter kits which are half price at Coles this week. I am planning to switch to Boost after my Kogan prepaid recharge expires. My understanding is that I will just have to port from Kogan to Boost.

Since the Boost starter kits are sold at half price at the moment. I was wondering if I could buy multiple Boost starter kits and use a new sim card every time when my recharge expires? Am I allowed to do so? Since I am not switching to a new provider, how does the porting thing work?

Thank you.

Cheers

  • You would probably need to port in and then out again using a prepaid sim from another provider.

    • Thanks for your reply. I reckon I can use one of those $2 sim card from another provider to port in and out? But my understanding is that most of those $2 sim cards do not come with any credit. Do I have to recharge (or select a prepaid plan) when activating the $2 sim card from another provider to port in and out?

      • What you are suggesting will work, and no you don't need to recharge with any credit. Just port out to a different provider (such as Optus or Vodafone $2 SIM) and then port back into Boost.

Just note that often it takes a couple of days for providers' systems to realise you have ported in or out, so if you think porting out and back in is all going to happen on the same day then you may be in for a shock (and loss of service for up to a day or two each time, completely dependent on the provider though).
