This is pretty much the Amazon US version of this deal.

It works out a bit more expensive than the previous deal, but this is due to the exchange rate not favouring the AUD at the moment. Still a good deal - probbly left over from the Black Friday/Cyber Monday deals.

Unlike the Amazon UK deal where delivery was a bit of hit and miss, in this case the delivery to Oz is confirmed.

  • Good timing… Should be just enough to backup my CD collection !!!

    • +1

We all know CD collection means porn!

    • Gave you a positive vote, because you where -1,
      That is all

  • +1

Bought this on the last deal. Awesome price for two 8TB WD Reds.

  • +1

It's as low as Amazon US has gone. But Amazon Germany will go lower - they hit a record low a couple of days ago, and it was by quite a lot. Pretty risky to wait though.

I was gutted to miss out on ~630(?) delivered due to the fact that camelcamelcamel price alerts are so slow (end of the day?) that it was over by the time the email came.

    • +1

I was also annoyed that the camelcamelcamel alert came late. Might just have to settle for this!

  • Can these 8TB WD Reds be pulled out and put into a NAS system like Synology? Any ideas what model HDD it is to check for compatibility?

    • +1

Yes they can. They are WD Red 8TB drives

      • Can confirm. I bought this for the wd drives for my synology.

The only crappy thing was I wanted to put the 2tb drives I removed into the duo. But it only works with WD drives.. would have been sweet to use the box for NAS backups

  • Not again! Must resist…..

  • Must. Not. Buy. Erghhhhhh

  • The enclosure encrypts the data infight?

    • +5

"inflight"…do you mean "on the fly" as in "in the background seamlessly". I'd say surely otherwise it'd be horrifically cumbersome.

Trouble for me is that this is "hardware raid"

In the event the controller card fails, you must locate a fully compatible RAID card and on-disk Meta data is nearly impossible to recover. This is especially problematic if all of your data sits on a RAID system that was discontinued years ago.

For me, having a single point of failure with a resultant almost certain irrecoverable data loss, no matter how unlikely, is scary in the extreme.

      Am I worrying unnecessarily?

      • +4

No you are not worrying unnecessarily,
I had a 2 drive model, the board failed, but drives where fine. Turns out there where multiple revisions of the board in my model, never found a board of the same revision, so now have 2 drives with my data I can not get too.
        Its been 3 years :(

        • this is a horrible tale.. i voted you both up

  • Just today I finished backing up my 12TB of data on my My Book from last deal. It's expensive but worth the peace of mind.

  • +2

Buy it for the drives, not the enclosure. You will get 2 x WD Red (equivalents), perfect for your NAS :)

Otherwise yes, if the enclosure fails, you will lose your data on the drives. The drives themselves will be fine and can be reused, but any data on them will be inaccessible.

Price is good from US, you will likely see cheaper from Germany/UK at some stage, I purchased mine from UK with no issues and much cheaper. But, you'll probably be waiting a month or so before the price drops again :)

  • Does anybody know if the drives are still encrypted when used in JBOD mode (ie no RAID)?

    • +1

You cannot turn off the encryption other than to remove the drives and abandon the enclosure.

  • I think the price has just dropped to $499?

    • Price in the title was inclusive of postage

  • Which makes it within $10 difference of the previous deal despite the crappy exchange rate….awesome deal…

  • If I remove and put the hdd in another nas(Seagate) would it void the warranty of hdd and won't be replaced/repaired by Wd.

      • Thanks but my question was different. I want to use the Wd red hdd in my Seagate readynas. I want to know if WD honour the warranty of hdd if it is removed from WD duo and put in another non WD device

        • Ah yeah, misread your question. Can't help you there!
