Gaming PC Suggestions

Hi all,
Am trying to build a pc before the end of the year. Need help and any suggestions on the parts i have picked out already. Budget is around the 1.3-1.4k mark.
Was wondering is it worth getting a 6gb vs 3gb on gtx 1060 for the money?
Thanks.

  • Hopefully someone can give you some advice, but can I also recommend posting in the PCpartpicker forum: https://au.pcpartpicker.com/forums/forum/2-part-list-opinion…
I recently posted there myself and was given some very good advice regarding upgrading an existing system vs a near new build.

    1. What resolution are you going to be running on?
    2. What games do you play?
    • 1080p i am not bothering with 4K or anything.
Games like GTA V BF1, etc.

      • does the monitor have FreeSync or G-Sync? and do you have an OS or should this be factored into the price of your build?

        • Dont have a monitor yet and no OS doesn't need to be factored as it is a small price anyway

        • @Marioedd: You might want to consider the RX480 and pair it with a FreeSync monitor. that way you'll save some money on the monitor as G-Sync is usually more expensive than FreeSync

  • -1

    Don't even think about 3GB.

After looking at your parts list it's pretty good.

  • If you skimp on the 'other' parts you could get a GTX 1070. Probably overkill for 1080p, more if you want a 1440p build. I used a H110 motherboard, a Bronze power supply, cheaper case and 256gb SSD.

    GTX 1070 build for <$1400 - https://au.pcpartpicker.com/list/mwFZ9W

    Or with a GTX 1060 - itd be about $1100 - https://au.pcpartpicker.com/list/M6jnyf

Otherwise your build looks fine if you want 'better' parts. I suppose you can mix and match to your heart's content.

And go for the 6gb 1060 not the 3gb.

    • PC Parts Picker is a handy tool however it's not great at serving up the best prices because they don't include Amazon and MSY.

I think best way to get a guesstimate on price is use control + F on https://www.msy.com.au/Parts/PARTS.pdf because MSY is usually cheapest or very close to it.

    • Thanks for your help arbor, i was thinking of the 1070 but thought it was overkill seeming it is nearly 3 times the price of the cpu and half the price of the build. If i was to get the 1070 might as well get good parts.

    • Also one thing, is the bronze power supply enough for everything?
Have seen and heard of a lot of cheap builds price skimping on power supplies and ending up in bad situations.
Thanks, i am new to this pc building world :)

  • No problem. PCs are a bit like that, there's full customization but it also means we all want to get the slightly better component for everything and the costs keep climbing. If you're gaming at 1080p, save the money and get the 1060, should be fine for a few years. You can always turn down some settings and keep the frame rate up.

The bronze power supply is fine for that CPU and GPU (other components the same for any build you do). The i5-6500 and 1060 is running at around 285W and the bronze power supply can deliver 80% of the power 100% of the time (ie 400W). Gold I believe is 90% and they also use better parts inside. You get what you pay for! But the Bronze is a big step up from the cheapy crappier no name PSUs.

And I agree with Diji - check out MSY, CPL and other stores to get the cheapest price. You can often find yourself saving $10 here or there for each part, which can lead to a lot of savings.

  • Here is part of the mini-ITX build I just made:

and this is what it looks like:

Fractal Design make very classy cases with built in dust filters and quiet fans. Mine runs very quiet and doesn't get hot during gaming. The PSU is gold-rated and very efficient, so I never hear the fans. Actually it's better quality than more expensive ATX PSUs (http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/corsair-sf450-power-supp…). The mini-ITX build just needs memory, SSD, monitor, peripherals, and your choice of graphics card.

You can shop around for SSD deals and the like. Memory should be around $100-110 for 16gb dual channel. Personally I went for a higher budget with the rest, to save me money in the long run. You can't go wrong with any of the graphics cards mentioned in the thread, even the 3gb 1060 will be fine if you get a good price and are fine with lowering settings over the years.

This is what I went with from the recent sales:
Toshiba m.2 NVME PCIE 128gb enterprise class boot drive ($85)
    Kingspec 1tb MLC SSD ($285)
LG Ultrawide 29" UFHD monitor ($300)

Also grabbed Windows 10 from Reddit for $20. Never had an issue with keys from there, and I've bought a number of them over the years. YMMV.

    • +1

Thanks for sharing. I do quite like that system of yours :)

  • if you decide on the 1060 i'd def get the 6gig version.
