Any Lawnmower Experts on i need advice???

Hey folks i hope all is well!

So i have a fairly big yard and i want to know your opinion on using a normal well i should say a none commercial lawnmower for cutting my 900 square meter yard?
I have had a few Briggs and Stratton i hate them to be honest so many issues. My old victa 2 strokes never had this many problems. I am thinking of either buying a commercial mower or at least a Honda?

My yard isn't the biggest but i am thinking i probably a lot more hours on the mower then most people?

I do not cut the grass often lately it has been once a month.

I would prefer a 2 stroke. The torque of a 4 stroke doesn't really make it much better then a 2 stroke. I have the B&S 450 148cc on a Victa chassis currently. Its had issues with the governor and carby. I keep the mower in the shed always.

  • Thats a big yard, have you considered a ride on?.

I have the same bs450 and its the best mower I have owned in a long time, the problems you are having sounds like you may be running E10.

    • Nah no E10 but I think it's a maintenance issue? You can't run premium in it either or it pings. I ran some through to clean it out. Also my bro left the mower tipped forward. Oil leaks out of the sump that way. That could have stuffed the carby. The governor is weird because the throttle linkage did break but I am not sure how.

Yea it's has the power probably the best B&S I have owned I just think maybe the engine is still to small for my yard.

I'd love a ride on but it won't fit into the backyard unless I make the gate bigger.

      • Need to make the gate bigger.

  • I've had one of these for a year.
    190cc Subaru engine.

    • +1

i got one of these a few weeks back they seem pretty good so far.

  • complete carby assemblies are really cheap on ebay. i think one for my old b&s quantum 40 is < $10 delivered. cheaper than a can of carby cleaner and gaskets

i find heaps of old 2 & 4 strokes on the kerbside

  • Thanks lads!

    • The Ryobi/Subaru runs fine on the cheapest petrol, and your current problem is not about engine size. I mow a larger area than you. When I had a Rover mower with Briggs & Stratton engine it was temperamental. Some days it would not start even after 20 attempts. The next week, it might start 1st or 2nd pull. There was no discernible pattern even though I cared for it like a mobile altar. My next mower, bought when money was scarce, was a cheap and cheerful Chinese-made Victa (just before Briggs & Stratton bought Victa) for $199 at BigW. Superb purchase - always started 1st or 2nd pull, never thirsty, it changed my attitude to mowing and over nearly 8 years saved me $000's compared to getting it done for me. Last year I read some mower engine reviews on the B&S website. So many reviews were particularly negative that I respect them for letting the public see them.

  • With a large block get the biggest deck you can…. commercial quality mowers tend to have larger decks, also self propulsion is worth looking into, but steer clear of the cheaper hondas and especially the John Deere ones.
