eBay - Potential Scam

Hi all,

I have tickets for an upcoming show in Canberra which I am no longer able to attend. I listed the tickets for slightly cheaper than what I paid for them through Ticketek and some guy just bought them. The problem being the guy that bought the tickets created the account on the same day he purchased the tickets and has 0 feedback. I should also specify he paid instantly.

I've sent an email asking if he would like to collect the tickets in person / is it possible to provide some ID to avoid being scammed and it's been about two days with no response.

What are peoples thoughts on this? I'm paranoid I'll send the tickets and he will create a paypal dispute or something.

  • If he's picking it up, only accept cash and refund the paypal payment (unless he paid via bank deposit). If you're posting the tickets, just read up on the paypal T&Cs whether seller protection applies to tickets. If he definitely pays in a secure way eg. cash, not paypal pickup, I dont see the need to get his ID.

    • Thanks for the reply.

I made the options postage and local pickup and he selected postage with the address being in Sydney.

Unfortunately he paid via PayPal instantly; it's been about 3 days and I've tried to contact him twice but have not received a response.

      • If you do have to hand it over with that paypal payment, I would film the handover of tickets with him and his ID that matches his ebay/paypal account details.

Otherwise, like @Ughhh said, refund the paypal payment at the time of handover and take cash.

    Sounds like a scam…

  • refund and relist

  • I've had this happen to me various times.

The first time I sent the item and was hit with a credit card chargeback from the buyer through PayPal (I did end up getting my money back months later though, after lots of hurdles).

The most recent time just last week, I immediately refunded their PayPal payment and blocked them on eBay before relisting the item.

My advice to you is: if you smell something fishy it probably is. Some people are worried about negative feedback, but I'd rather have my hard earned money than risk losing it over an arbitrary number on a website. Plus your overall feedback only lasts for a year anyway and will return back to 100% eventually.

Oh, and don't trust whatever eBay or PayPal tell you because 99.9% of the time they'll side with the buyer. I've had eBay tell me to send an item and after I was scammed they were of no help.

In this case I wouldn't send the tickets. Agree with the buyer to do a face to face meet up and a cash transaction before refunding their PayPal payment. Honestly, eBay nor PayPal will care if you film the handover or not. Don't risk it.

  • If you do post it, MAKE SURE to send it with at least Registered post so you have proof of signature and tracking, I hear some people buy tickets, claim they never received them and get paypal to refund them.
