    Ordered one for myself. :)

    This is the old version.
    I heard a few complaints regarding the wifi, a bit slow and single USB and win8.1 rather than win10.
    Still great price though comparing to the new version is about $179.

    The nee version has the wifi upgraded, win10 and 2 USB. One of them is usb3.

    • Agreed.

      I have the newer version you are talking about - the STK1AW32SC, with the AC wifi, Cherry Trail Atom x5-Z8300 (capable of playing 8bit HEVC), USB 3 etc.

      Works great for net browsing, Office, online media like Netflix / Stan / Foxtel / UFC, local media playback etc, and can run for about 5 hours off my Xiaomi 10400mAh power bank (works using a USB y cable directly plugged in the tv too).

      IMO you would be better off waiting for a deal on that (I got it for $140 delivered) or something more powerful.

        I'm confused, why would you need a power bank for it if it's going to be plugged into say a TV via USB?

        • +2

          I found you need to have two USB ports to power it (hence the need for a USB y cable), which not all TVs have, or might not be available to use, so you can use the powerbank instead of USB or having to find a spare power point to use the provided AC plug.

        • Interesting. Kinda defeats the convenience of it being a plug and play stick but I suppose a USB splitter isn't too big of an inconvenience.

          @RedSky:

          Yeah - I read that for the next iteration of these sticks, they are hoping to use the power pin / connector within a HDMI connection to power it.

        • @kirt: 140 delivered wow thats a good price, can I ask you how it performs, I plan to use it as a home theatre PC - playing movies off hard drive/stand/netflix and occasional browsing - would it be ok? Any slows while playing videos ?

        • @kirt: The TV's USB ports will most likely only give a current of <500mA - enough to power the USB sticks and a smaller portable hard drive. I think these sticks need a minimum of 1A, which is why it needs to hook up to two ports.

          @confusedhuh:

          It's far more powerful than I thought it would be…it easily runs Office, and I even got it streaming Steam games!

          As far as local media playback, it has no problems with 8bit 1080p HEVC files, but struggled with 10bit, however everything else I have thrown at it plays fine.

          For me, the media playing abilities are an added bonus for the sticks primary purpose of replacing my netbook when travelling and using it for net surfing / Office / Netflix etc.

          See here for info using it as a media player:

    • Agreed mine keeps asking to upgrade to Windows 10 when it doesn't have enough space haha

  • these atom sticks are best described.. hardware snails! New & Old versions.

    Out of this price point but the only Intel Stick that Intel got right are the core M3 & core m5. I've tested both and both had the oomph factor.

      Biggest downside to these sticks are not necessarily the CPUs (I have a number of Baytrail and Cherrytrail devices) - but moreso the RAM it has. Yes, the CPU isnt an i7 but it will work pretty well with 90% of daily work. What is needed is more RAM as Win10 pretty much takes up most of the 2GB on boot, with only a very little bit left over for your other applications. Not to mention those mysterious processes in the background that eat up RAM and processing power.
      I've got both 4GB and 2GB versions of similar devices (as Windows Tablets), and the extra RAM makes huge differences in usage. I would not get one of these unless they are at least 4GB RAM and 64GB storage to be honest.

  • the 64gb drive worth $40 elsewhere though currently on special on same site at $24

    so the stick is somewhat $60 , and you get win8.1

    seems like a good deal.

  • Does anyone know if the Foxtel Go Windows app would work with this?

    • Yep.
